Fabulous Lady Captain’s Week-End: It was a week-end that started on Wednesday! The traditional Lady Captain’s scramble attracted a huge entry on a lovely sunny evening. The lucky winners were Jean Conway, Frances Carroll and Laura Cliffe. Following on the presentation of all outstanding prizes, the draw for playing partners for the week-end was made and what a week-end it turned out to be!
The real action kicked off on Friday afternoon as Eileen Harty, busy on the Book, set us off on our merry way, each of us hoping to capture the beautiful specially commissioned Bronze Lady titled “Celebration”. It was a hot day and Jean and her daughter Odharna produced “healthy” refreshments and special homemade cakes halfway round. By Friday night there was a tightly packed Leaderboard and many players were in with a chance to capture the coveted prize.
Saturday – A Day to remember for the Ruane Family: Proceedings got underway at 12.30 with the final groups expected to finish before 6.30pm. The atmosphere around the course and Clubhouse was electric. Jean welcomed her family, some of whom had travelled from the USA, and friends to play in the Visitors section. At the halfway stage – again there was a refreshments stop featuring lovely Cocktails and more of Odharna’s stunning cakes. Many players indulged, others, especially those going well stuck with the Sparkling Water! However in the end, it was Deirdre Ruane, playing in the second last group who prevailed and emerged a worthy winner with a net result of 143 playing off 16, closely followed by her daughter Catherine playing off 19 also with a 143 net. What an achievement for Mother and Daughter! The Gross prize was won by Mary Lou Carroll who had the lowest round of the week-end with a stunning 67 on the Saturday. In 3rd former lady captain Jean Conway, fresh from golfing practice in the U.S., had a net 148 playing off 21. Joan Ronayne played superb golf over the two days and bagged 4th prize with a net 148. June Whyte, a regular on the podium took 5th with 150 net.
In the categories Joanne Fox had a nice win in the 0-23 category, Marie T Curran played really well on the Saturday to win the 24-29 category and Mary Herlihy, a regular on these Notes took the 30-36 category. Bridget Blackwell playing off 37 had a super round on Friday to take the best Friday prize while Fionola Butler joined her sister Joanne on the podium when she won the best Saturday with a tasty 69.
The much coveted and esteemed Past Captain’s prize was won by Margaret O Sullivan, another regular prizewinner, while our hardworking Treasurer Stella Kinsella won the Committee Prize. Gerry Lyons, Rita Harnedy and Mairead Cristoir, enjoyed a great win in the 9 hole scramble which saw many of our Get into Golf players perform really well in their first Lady Captain’s competition.
The Guest Prize was a very hot contest. The winner was Jean’s nephew Darren Connolly with a great score of 43 points. Genes will out, and second spot was filled by our Lady Captain’s daughter Bronagh with 38 pointswhile Lori Whitney placed third with 37 points.
To finish off a memorable day for the Ruane family, Tony won the Mens 9 hole competition with 22 points.
On behalf of all the lady members I would like to thank Jean, Denis and family for a really memorable week-end. We were pampered from start to finish! The clubhouse looked lovely thanks to Marie Curran’s floral arrangements. Austin and Morrie had the course in stunning condition and on Saturday evening we all sat down to a wonderful 3 course meal served up by Liam and Ali and their team. Dancing followed with the movers and shakers dancing to the lively music provided by Hugh O Donnell
Maria Moloney Boutique – Mary Lou does it Again!:The Maria Moloney boutique competition is always one of the most popular on the calendar.
