Ladies Notes w/e 30th July 2019

All set for Lady Captain’s Week-End:  On Friday and Saturday next, the fairways in West Waterford will be busy as the lady members contest the 27th running of our Lady Captain’s prize, the blue riband of the golfing calendar.  Hosted by our esteemed Captain Jean O Donovan the 36 hole stroke competition will be a test of stamina and ability.

A little about Jean!  Our current Lady Captain Jean O Donovan first arrived in Dungarvan almost 40 years ago to take up a teaching post in the Mercy Convent, now known as ArdScoilnaDeise.  Jean Connolly, as she was then, quickly adapted to the smaller confines of Dungarvan from the bright lights of Dublin.  As a P.E. (Physical Education) and Irish teacher Jean quickly got involved in sport.  She was a founder member of the Dungarvan Hockey Club and was also a competitive member of Minnies Squash Club.  Tennis played a major part in Jean’s sporting life, and with husband Denis O Donovan, the O Donovan family were active members of the Causeway Tennis Club.

Off the sports field Jean was President of the Dungarvan Choral Society and held leading roles in many of the musicals produced during the heady days of the late 1970’s and 80’s.

While husband Denis is a keen Tennis player and racing enthusiast. Jean’s pedigree contains a long line of golfers.  Indeed Jean’s late mother was a regular on the Dungarvan golf courses when she came down to visit Jean and Denis.  It  was only in 2007 that Jean got round to taking up golf.  No doubt, rearing four children, Aisling, Darragh, Odharna and Bronagh and also working full time postponed her inevitable foray on to the fairways!

Jean has represented West Waterford on numerous occasions and over the years has featured in many Club competitions.  As a Committee member and Lady Captain Jean has brought her organisational skills to the fore and this year we have a number of new Sponsors and new competitions.

On behalf of the Lady members I would like to wish Jean the best of luck for her week-end and we look forward to welcoming Jean’s family and friends to the Club.  It will be a memorable occasion.

Lady Captain’s Scramble & Presentation of Outstanding Prizes:  On Wednesday evening the traditional Lady Captain’s scramble will take place with a shotgun start at 6.30pm.  The all important draw for partners for the week-end will also take place followed by the presentation of all outstanding prizes at 9.00 pm.

Mary Herlihy hits the Winners Enclosure:  It was nice to see Mary Herlihy, who contributes so much to the Club win the June 9 hole competition.  Playing off 34 Mary had 36 points.  In second place, we had Laura Cliffe playing off 36 also with 36 points.  This is a name which will appear regularly on these notes in the future!  Filling the third spot was Mary Donnelly playing off 20 with 35 points.

Maria Moloney Competition:  The Maria Moloney 18 hole stroke competition kindly sponsored by Margaret O Sullivan was well supported on Thursday.  Unfortunately due to a “Technical Glitch” the official results are not available at the time of going to press.  See next week’s Notes.

Important Date for your Diary – 28th July:  Our Mens Captain Tom Higgins has very kindly put up a prize for the Ladies and this competition will take place on Sunday July 28th.  This competition is always one of the highlights of our calendar.
