West Waterford Ladies on Winning Trail! All week I have been listening to the Sports reports on radio talking about what a wonderful weekend of sport was on offer. Well for the West Waterford Ladies it was no different. We had three teams out competing in the Golf Ireland Leagues.
On Saturday the Minor team were dispatched to play a well fancied Tramore side in Tramore. Our team, managed by Mary Herlihy comprised of Finola Butler, Joanne Fox, Marie T Curran, Ciara Donnelly and Nora Flynn. The tie was finely balanced as each team won two matches. The deciding match went to the 19th hole and despite our best efforts, victory went to the home team. Well done Ladies on a very game performance and many thanks to the caddies and supporters
Meanwhile, on the same day in glorious conditions in West Waterford the Intermediate team managed by Frances Carroll and comprising of June Whyte, Mary Lou Carroll, Denise Nugent, Eithna Ashby and Margaret O Sullivan played Waterford Castle. It is not easy playing in front of your home supporters, but our team played super golf to earn a well deserved victory. Again sincere thanks to the Caddies and supporters.
On Sunday it was the turn of the Challenge cup team. For the second time in two days the Waterford Castle players had to make the journey to West Waterford. Our team managed by Suzanne Datlon comprised of Phil Kelly, Bridget Blackwell, Mary Herlihy, Frances Carroll and Ger Curran. Played in beautiful conditions, the West Waterford team recorded a great win, again playing some outstanding golf on the way to victory. There was a great turnout by the supporters, and of course, the hard working Caddies played a vital role on the day. Many thanks to Morrie and the course staff who had the course looking splendid over the week-end. Also thanks to the Ken and his staff in the Garden Café who fed and watered all the teams.
Denise Nails the GOY/Medal Competition sponsored by Blackwater Sports: Denise Nugent is a stalwart of West Waterford Golf Club and on Thursday last she played fabulous golf to bring in a nett 69 playing off 21.9. Margaret O Sullivan is really only coming back to golf but her form at the moment is tremendous. Playing off 26.1 Margaret returned a 70 nett to finish second. This year the onerous task of Lady Captain lies with Ciara Donnelly. It is having a great effect on her golf game as she is constantly on the Winners Podium. This time Ciara finished third with a nett 70 playing off 26.6
Frances fires in a good round! The Greenway Ecostore sponsored 18 Hole competition certainly produced a tight finish! Frances Carroll claimed the first spot on the countback with 38 points playing off 37. Mary Donnelly who plays off 27 also brought in a very good score of 38 points but the difference in handicaps certainly contributed to Frances’s 25 points on the back nine!
