Ger Hickey wins in True Grit Style! –  On Friday and Saturday last the 30th running of the Lady Captain’s prize was played in very warm conditions.  Our Lady Captain Ciara Donnelly had arranged a fabulous array of prizes and, as we headed out with our bag of “goodies” ,we all hoped we would win the first prize of a beautiful painting and a trip to Druids Glen.

There was some hot scoring on the first day, many of which were in the Sixties.  However it was Geraldine Hickey who scorched round.  Playing off 38 Ger returned a first day score of 64 two shots ahead of her nearest rival Jean Conway who had a 66 playing off 23.  It is never easy to hold on to a lead but Ger went out on Saturday and displayed True Grit by sticking in there and returning a score of 70 giving her an overall score of 134. Well Done Ger.  Mary French, a former Lady Captain played fabulous golf over the two days and with a score of 138 playing off 39 finished second.  Mary Lou Carroll always plays steady golf and won the prestigious Gross prize with a 184.  Geraldine Curran who has enjoyed a stellar season finished in third place with a score of 139 playing off 39.  Margaret O Sullivan playing off 26 had a good two days taking fourth prize with 141, while another former Lady Captain Mary Herlihy filled the fifth spot with a nice 142 playing off 33.

Cat A (0-23) was won by the consistent Finola Butler playing off 23 with a 148 while Cat B (24-29) was won by Get into Golf Co-ordinator  Una Mulligan who had a 144 playing off 26.  Marian Hilliard played solidly to take the Cat C (30-36) with a 146 while Mary Spratt was a very popular winner of Cat D (37-54) with 146 playing off 41.

Jean Conway played fabulous golf on Friday and won the Best First day with a score of 66 playing off 23.  Day 2 was won by Mary Donnelly, a regular in the prize winners with a fine score of 69 playing off 25. The Past Captains Prize is always closely contested. This year it was nice to see Phil Kelly win it with a 146 playing off 29. The Visitors Prize went to Isobel Kirwan from the Gold Coast while the Committee Prize was awarded to our very hardworking Secretary Bridget Blackwell.   The Nine Hole was won by Reena McDonnell who always features in the Lady Captain’s prize winners. The men were not left out and Brian Hilliard added to the Hilliard family tally when he won the 9 hole on Saturday evening. As for the rest of us – well as Van Morrisson says “There will be Days like This”!

The Get Into Golf ladies got their first taste of Lady Captain’s competition action with a five hole scramble.  The deserving winners were the competent quartet of Teresa Aherne, Doireann Cotter, Sharon Madden and Marcella Scanlon.  Watch this space for the re-appearance of these names!

The presentation of Prizes took place on Saturday evening and such was the glamour on show, that we could have had Cecelia Holman Lee down judging the Best Dressed!  The atmosphere was electric and the craic was great.  Special thanks to Ken and Jean and all the catering staff.

Congratulations to all the Winners and special thanks to Ciara who organised a superb week-end.
