All Systems Go for Lady Captain’s Weekend!
Next Friday August 12th and Saturday 13th are the most important dates in the Ladies Golfing Calendar in West Waterford when Ciara Donnelly our esteemed Lady Captain presents her Captain’s Prize.
We are very fortunate to have Ciara as our Lady Captain this year. The 2022 season was always going to be different, given that the members now own and run the Club. Ciara has brought her energy and expertise to the role working closely with her counterparts in the Men’s Club, Captain Denis Herlihy and President David Condon and, of course, liaising with the Operating team currently in place.
Ciara joined West Waterford in 2000 and while her prowess on the Golf Course was immediately evident it was her gift for Administration matters that was pounced upon! She quickly became Handicap Secretary followed by a number of years as Secretary. Speaking with Ciara recently she recounted the great days starting out playing golf where so many friendships were forged over missed putts and wayward drives.
Following the birth of her daughter Aoibhin Ciara took a long break from golf. However the late and much missed Mary Barron, a particularly close friend, made sure that Ciara returned to golf. Indeed, it was Mary who influenced Ciara to take on the Captaincy role, a role that Mary herself filled with such empathy and style.
Ciara has represented West Waterford on many occasions with some success. She won Noreen Byrne’s Captain’s Prize in 2018, an accolade only reserved for the good players! Ciara can also claim to be a member of that very select group of golfers who have achieved a Hole in One in their golfing careers.
We look forward to welcoming Ciara’s family to West Waterford next weekend. I have no doubt that Ray and Aoibhin will be on hand to help out throughout the two days. The two day stroke competition gets underway at 1pm on Friday and at 12.30 on Saturday followed by a meal at 7.30pm
Good Luck to all the players. May the drives be long and the putts short! Ciara, we will be counting down the sleeps next week!
Get Into Golf Ladies Make their Mark! On Friday last we organised our first Club Scramble for the Get Into Golf ladies. The idea was that the established golfers would lead the way but judging from the results, the Get into Golf players really made their presence felt! There was only one shot separating the first three groups! In first place we had Mary Lou Carroll whose team of Heather Foley and Hannah Meaney returned a score of 41 shots. Closely following in second place we had Frances Carroll whose team of Lorna Behan and Carolyn O Connor returned 42 shots which included a Birdie on the par 5 fifth hole! Get Into Golf Co-Ordinator Una Mulligan filled the third spot also with 42 shots. Una was ably assisted by Noreen Kelly and Ann Phelan. We look forward to the next scramble.

Play in Pink Scramble:
On Sunday West Waterford was awash in Pink as the ladies turned up for the Play in Pink Scramble the proceeds of which are going to Breast Cancer Research. The winners were Finola Butler, Frances Carroll and Mary Curran who all played steady golf to return a nett score of 47. It was great to see Jean Conway back in the prizewinners. Assisted by Bridget Broderick and Mary French the team returned a score of 47 1/12 to take second place. In third we had Mary Lou Carroll, Phil Kelly and Miriam Walsh with a score of 47 9/12.
