Gents Notes w/e Sunday 6th June 2021

Captains Drive In 2021
Captain Edward Hickey and Lady Captain Neil Suipeal were on hand on bank holiday Monday for a belated but most welcome hosting of the captain’s drive in for 2021. As always, Pat Murphy had the first tee in pristine condition worthy of the occasion as members of the ladies and gents club turned out in force to support their respective captains. Both our captains have already put in an enormous effort in introducing the new WHS programme and getting the golfing year up and running . We wish Edward and Neil every success for the remainder of 2021.

President’s Prize 2020
Due to Covid 19 we were unable to hold our presidents prize last year. Our president in 2020 Mr Pat Murphy has very kindly agreed to host the event on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th June 2021. The competition will be played over 18 holes and members can play on either of the two days. Pat spends endless hours working on the course and takes great pride in his work. You can show your appreciation by entering for this prestigious prize. Timesheets will be posted on the notice board this week so get your name in early to secure your preferred tee time.

Club Competitions
We held our first club competition on bank holiday Monday June 7th. Thanks to our competition secretary Jimmy Murphy and handicap secretary Tony Ruane for ensuring that the preparatory work had been completed so that we had a smooth transition into the new system. As expected we had a few hiccups on day one but those are being sorted. Anybody encountering difficulties with handicaps, registration or signing in on the computer should notify the office and a member of our handicap committee will be glad to discuss any problems with you. We would ask you to be patient as we are all learning as we go and it will take some time to get everything working properly.

Inter Club Competitions
Our captain Edward has been busy recruiting team managers for the various upcoming inter club events. We now have managers for all teams and we would ask panelists to cooperate with their respective team managers. The fact that inter club competitions are now played on a home and away basis doesn’t make life any easier but we just have to get on with it. The deadlines for completion of first rounds is fast approaching so we need the full cooperation of all concerned.

How to access your WHS handicap
To access your handicap information you must create a new account. To create an account you should log o to www.golfireland.ie to register for the first time. You will be asked to enter your 8 digit GUI number and your 4 digit pin both of which are found on the back of your GUI membership card. Once you have registered you will have access to your handicap details and records. We would urge all members to register now in order to familiarise yourselves with the WHS system. When the course reopens we will be available to assist you with any queries you may have. A list of member handicap indices is posted on the outdoor notice board. However, as your handicap is updated daily under the new system it is essential that you register online for your WHS handicap. In the meantime you should log on to www.golfnet.ie/whs where you will find lots of useful information regarding the new system.

Golf Ireland App
Many members have downloaded the App and reaction generally has been mainly positive. The Golf Ireland App provides for pre-registration and return of general play scores. Using the App, members can enjoy the flexibility of recording scores for handicap purposes for both 9-hole and 18-hole social rounds played in accordance with the Rules of Handicapping. You can also view your handicap index and playing record as well as following and communicating with friends. To download the App, search for “Golf Ireland” in the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android) and select the version with the Golf Ireland logo. For further information you can log on to www.golfireland.ie and follow the link for Golf Ireland App.

Contact the Office
You can contact Gillian at the office from Tuesday to Saturday 9am-2pm. At other times please leave a message and we will contact you. Ring 058 43216 You can email the office at info@westwaterfordgolf.com

Flag Poles and Bunkers
You are reminded not to touch the flag pole on the greens. Use your putter to pop up the ball gently, using the device on the bottom of the pole. There are no rakes in bunkers so under a local rule you can place within 6 inches in a bunker..

Members Responsibility
All members are required to fully comply with all parts of the Protocol. As we move into another phase in the easing of restrictions it is essential that we all continue to comply with Covid 19 protocol. Your club will do everything possible to ensure a safe return but it is only with the full cooperation of the members that we can fully implement the protocol. We will keep you informed of updates as we receive them. We have successfully gone through the process in previous reopening, thanks to your cooperation. We look forward to your continued support this time.

Masks are Mandatory
If you are entering the clubhouse for any reason you are required to wear a face mask. Sanitizer is available and we recommend you use it when entering and leaving the building
