Gradual Return to Normality
Hard to believe that five weeks have passed since golf clubs reopened following the lockdown. Whereas we are all delighted to be back playing it has been difficult to organize any definite programme regarding fixtures. Thankfully as we go through the phases we are now in a position to make some progress. Mens club competitions will resume on bank holiday Monday June 7th with an 18 hole stableford competition off the white markers. Plans are being finalized for a midweek 9-hole qualifier and the regular weekend gents competitions. Some members have been asking why we didn’t start sooner but we thought it best to move slowly and ensure that everything possible was in place to comply with public health guidelines. We thank you for your patience and hope you enjoy the return to regular club activity. Your men’s committee has been busy ensuring that everything is in order regarding handicaps and WHS registration.
Further easing of restrictions
From June 7th onwards (subject to public health outlook at the time) the following competitions are permitted. So-called ‘Major competitions and events ( Captain’s Prize, President’s Prize, etc. Internal Club Matchplay Tournaments, along with Club Open Competitions and Scratch Cups. Members should log on to www.golfireland.ie for the latest information on the return to golf protocol.
Here Comes the Summer
Maybe its a bit soon to get excited but what a wonderful weekend we had weatherwise at West Waterford golf club. The past week has seen endless hours of rain but despite this I think all will agree that the condition of the course over the weekend is a tribute to the ongoing dedication of our course staff and volunteers. With the trees now in full bloom the amazing array of colour throughout the course is a sight to behold. Just add blue skies, sunshine and temperatures in the low 20’s. Where else would you rather be.
How to access your WHS handicap
To access your handicap information you must create a new account. To create an account you should log o to www.golfireland.ie to register for the first time. You will be asked to enter your 8 digit GUI number and your 4 digit pin both of which are found on the back of your GUI membership card. Once you have registered you will have access to your handicap details and records. We would urge all members to register now in order to familiarise yourselves with the WHS system. When the course reopens we will be available to assist you with any queries you may have. A list of member handicap indices is posted on the outdoor notice board. However, as your handicap is updated daily under the new system it is essential that you register online for your WHS handicap. In the meantime you should log on to www.golfnet.ie/whs where you will find lots of useful information regarding the new system.
World Handicapping System
Our handicap secretary Tony Ruane has been busy checking out the new system over the past few weeks. An extensive check has been conducted to ensure member details and handicaps are correct and updated. Tony has also been studying the changes regarding the new rules and format for the various inter club competitions and has produced the relevant reports for the respective team managers. We appreciate the enormous effort that Tony is putting in as handicap secretary and would also like to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of Gillian in the office for her continued cooperation for the smooth running of the new system.

Temporary Local Rules
Due to the unpredictable weather conditions playing conditions may vary from day to day. Members and visitors should check the notices at the first tee regarding playing rules.
Flag Poles and Bunkers
You are reminded not to touch the flag pole on the greens. Use your putter to pop up the ball gently, using the device on the bottom of the pole. There are no rakes in bunkers so under a local rule you can place within 6 inches in a bunker..
All members are required to fully comply with all parts of the Protocol. As we move into another phase in the easing of restrictions it is essential that we all continue to comply with Covid 19 protocol. Your club will do everything possible to ensure a safe return but it is only with the full cooperation of the members that we can fully implement the protocol. We will keep you informed of updates as we receive them. We have successfully gone through the process in previous reopening, thanks to your cooperation. We look forward to your continued support this time.
Masks are Mandatory
If you are entering the clubhouse for any reason you are required to wear a face mask. Sanitizer is available and we recommend you use it when entering and leaving the building.
