One week Closer
The waiting game goes on but at least we are moving closer to the proposed date for the lifting of Level 5 restrictions on April 5th. That means another 4 weeks at least before we see golf clubs reopening. Certainly the weather over the past weekend would have been ideal for golfing with daylight hours moving gradually moving closer to 7pm. We can dream about going out at 4.30 and getting 9 holes played. The good news is that our course crew are working hard in getting the course into shape. As you are aware the grass is starting to grow more quickly which means it has to be cut more often. Continuous sanding of the fairways has ensured that the effect of the recent heavy rainfall has been dealt with and the greens have been maintained to their usual high standard. Be assured that when we do reopen that the course will be ready for you to enjoy your golf to the utmost. We look forward to welcoming you back. Most likely it will be members only at the beginning as we gradually progress to a normal schedule in accordance with Golf Ireland directives. We will keep you informed of any updates as we receive them.

A Weekend of Sport
At this stage we have to be content with getting our sports fix from the television. Although nothing beats being there we had a great variety of sporting fixtures over the weekend. Bryson de Chambeau produced the goods at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill with a one shot victory over Lee Westwood. The 377 yard drive on the par 5, 6th hole was well worth watching and brought the game to a new level. All round the event produced a high standard that kept us enthralled throughout the weekend. Well done to Leona Maguire on her first LPGA top-10 finish on US soil. The highlight of this week is of course The Players at TPC Sawgrass and I am sure there will be no shortage of excitement here. An unexpected, but deserved result in the Manchester derby will have raised the spirits of the United faithful. Victories for Munster and Leinster have set up the dream final of the Pro 14 in three weeks time.

Reasons to be Cheerful
The past weekend has given us a taste of the weather we can expect in the coming weeks. Our greenkeeper has the course in tip top condition and cutting of fairways and rough is back in full swing. You can be assured that the course will be ready when you are and it’s only a matter of weeks before we are back enjoying the joys of Spring at West Waterford golf club. By the end of March sunset will be 7.37pm. April : 8.30 pm, May: 9.17 pm, June: 9.34 pm. There are brighter days ahead and they are getting closer by the week.
Stay Safe and Talk to Someone
It looks like it will be a while before we are back playing golf. In the meantime we would ask you to comply with Covid guidelines and minimize your contacts. You might however consider calling a friend or acquaintance for a chat. Apart from the golf, people are also missing the social side of club membership. So make that call and it could mean a lot to someone who is feeling lonely at this time. Spring is in the air and with the vaccine on the way we can cautiously look forward to an end to the pandemic.
We extend our sympathies to Michael O Keeffe and the extended family on the recent passing of his father. May William rest in peace.
