Seamus Power finishes tied 12th at Rocket Mortgage Classic
Seamus Power produced some of the finest golf of his career to finish tied 12th in a high class field at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit at the weekend July 2nd – 5th. The West Waterford man opened with a five-under-par bogey free 67 on day one to lie just two strokes behind the joint leaders. On day two Seamus produced another superb driving performance to roar into contention for his maiden PGA Tour victory.
In his second round on Friday, Seamus followed his opening 67 with a six-under 66 to share the early clubhouse lead with Matthew Wolff (64), Mark Hubbard (66) and Bryson DeChambeau (67) on 11-under par at Detroit Golf Club. Driving accuracy, not power, has been a problem area for the Tooraneena man in recent seasons but he was superb from the tee for the second day in a row, hitting 11 drives over 300 yards and finding 10 of 14 fairways in regulation.
In round three on Saturday, Seamus had to dig deep into his well of patience to keep red-hot playing partner Matthew Wolff in his sights and go into the final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic just five shots off the lead. Having started the day just one stroke behind Webb Simpson and Chris Kirk, Seamus chiselled out a three-under 69 to Wolff’s 64 to share fourth place on 14-under par. He must have been greatly encouraged with a three-under-par round having suffered his share of disappointing Saturday’s over the past three years. He had also gone through 54 consecutive holes with just one bogey.
Seamus entered the final round on Sunday just five shots behind overnight leader Matthew Wolff starting the day. The West Waterford man knew a fourth successive sub-70 round would catapult him close to the top 125 in the FedExCup standings in his bid to regain full playing rights but it was not to be.
He made a 13 footer for birdie at the first and a 17-footer at the third to get off to the dream start. But as DeChambeau (26) carded a best of the day, seven-under 65 to Wolff’s 71 to come from three shots behind the 21-year old to win his sixth PGA Tour title by three strokes on 23-under, Power played the remaining holes in two-over.
It added up to a level par 72 that left him in a nine-way tie for 12th on 14-under. Seamus collects a cheque for 138,000 dollars for his performance.
It was a weekend that kept us glued to the TV, the mobile and the I Pad as we followed the action hole by hole to cheer on our hero. A superb performance from Seamus and a sign of greater days ahead in the near future.

Busy weekend as Club Competitions resume at West Waterford.
