Gents Notes w/e Sun 31st Jan 2021

A tribute by Pat Murphy on behalf of West Waterford Golf Club
It was with deep sadness and loss that we learned of the untimely death of our esteemed founding President Derry Twomey. Derry passed away peacefully on 22nd January 2021. Pre deceased by his wonderful wife Bernie in September 2007, who also served as the first Lady Captain of West Waterford golf club.
As the inaugural captain of the club it was my privilege and an education to serve beside this formidable duo. Derry was the epitome of all that is good in human nature. His caring and concern for the welfare and well being of others was always at the top of his agenda. Nowhere was this more obvious than in his enormous contribution to Dungarvan Lions Club, West Waterford Golf Club and the wider community
At this sad and difficult time we share in his loss and grieve with his loving sons James and Dermot, daughters Margot and Marilla and the extended family.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé

Those we love don’t go away
They walk beside us every day
Unseen, unheard but always near
Still loved still missed and very dear.

Following today’s announcement by the Irish Government that the current period of restrictions will be extended, Golf Ireland notes with regret that golf and all other sporting facilities in the Republic of Ireland are to remain closed.

Golf Ireland continues to engage with the relevant authorities in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland to ensure that golf returns as soon as the public health situation improves sufficiently.

The main objective for us all is to continue to do what we can to safeguard ourselves and others from further spread of Covid-19.

We urge all of our affiliate clubs and their members to continue to adhere to the public health restrictions in place at this time.

Stay Safe and Talk to Someone
It looks like it will be a while before we are back playing golf. In the meantime we would ask you to comply with Covid guidelines and minimize your contacts. You might however consider calling a friend or acquaintance for a chat. Apart from the golf, people are also missing the social side of club membership. So make that call and it could mean a lot to someone who is feeling lonely at this time. Spring is in the air and with the vaccine on the way we can cautiously look forward to an end to the pandemic.
