Comeragh Oil Winter League – Round 3 underway
With over 100 entries last week despite the weather, round 3 of our Winter league is well advanced and all going well will conclude on Sunday next 2nd February. Great credit is due to our dynamic duo who somehow managed to cut all fairways and rough during the past week. The work on the newly refurbished bunkers is starting to pay dividends as all are in play and the drainage is working perfectly. With one week remaining in round 3 most teams already have their four cards. Expect some surprises when the results are published next weekend as a number of teams have recorded exceptional scores. The top eight teams will qualify for the playoff matchplay stage and it would be a wise man who could predict the eventual top 8 at this stage of the league. As things stand at the moment all 12 teams are still in the hunt and it’s just a matter of getting the full team contributing to the team effort. Round 3 continues on Monday 26th January and will run until Sunday 2nd February. At the end of each week the team scores will be checked and a decision taken as to the extension of any round. Whereas all teams could do with an improvement in their scoring teams A,B,E,G and J need an extra effort in the coming week. If you haven’t played round 3 so far please do so this week. As always those not plating in the league are welcome to play in the weekly competition.
Inter Club Competitions
It’s that time of year when we start making preparations for the upcoming GUI inter club competitions. With a view to this we are currently in the process of appointing team managers for the respective teams. A meeting regarding the South East League will take place on Tuesday 28th January at Youghal golf club. West Waterford won this league in 2019 and is responsible for the organization of teams and fixtures for 2020. Just noticed that we have another interesting draw against neighbours Gold Coast in the first round of the Fred Perry Trophy.

Mr. Diarmuid Horgan Captain West Waterford Golf Club 2020
In 2004 Diarmuid Horgan on the advice of his family decided to take up golf as a form of recreation and an opportunity to meet new friends in the process. That was over 15 years ago and on many occasions during that time he recalls that it was one of the best decisions he ever made.
During his time at West Waterford he has made an enormous contribution through his involvement in course improvements and in fundraising events. A tireless worker, he has become a great ambassador for the club through his involvement in all club activities and his participation in various charitable golfing events throughout the country. Diarmuid served as president of our club in 2016 and 2017.
A native of Kerry Diarmuid recalls a very happy 9 years when he lived in Cork. From there he moved to Dungarvan where he and his late wife Noreen raised their family in the environs of a very successful farming business in Colligan. His ambitious nature and business acumen led to the formation of Dungarvan Transport which has grown into the successful venture that it is today.
Diarmuid’s outgoing personality led to his joining Dungarvan Lions Club where he served as president. Always willing to share his talents he went on to join the Dungarvan Show Society and also became active in Dungarvan Point to Point. A big GAA fan, he rarely misses a Waterford or a Kerry match. On the social side he enjoys Country and Western and traditional Irish music. His love of dancing saw him perform in Deise Jigs and Reels. Diarmuid enjoys his daily walk through Colligan wood and has a keen interest in horse racing. Since taking up golf he has made great strides in the game and his competitive streak makes him a force to be reckoned with on any golf course. We are fortunate to have a man of Diarmuid’s standing as our captain for 2020 and he carries with him the full support of the ladies and gents at West Waterford golf club.
