Level 5 – Clubs must Close
Statement from GUI and ILGU @ 4.45pm on Wednesday 21st October 2020
Following intensive engagement over the past 48 hours, we have been informed this afternoon by Sport Ireland that, very regrettably golf clubs must close under the new level 5 restrictions.Essential course maintenance is permitted to continue under level 5. We have sought clarity on the issue as to whether ranges/practice facilities can remain open for exempted activities. We will update clubs on this as soon as possible.
We all expected changes when Level 5 would be introduced but nothing could have prepared us for the shock we got on Wednesday evening when the above statement was circulated to all golf clubs in Ireland. I suppose the fact that it took so long to make the decision should have alerted us that something drastic was on the cards. Much has been said and written on the matter over the last week and the general consensus seems to be that there was no justification for this decision. From the outset, golf has proven to be one of the safest sports during the Covid period. We put all the required safety precautions in place and our members and visitors complied totally with the regulations. We would have no problem in closing the clubhouse for a few weeks and maintaining strict contact tracing as required . Anyway, we are where we are and I would ask all our members to keep in touch with each other and maintain the friendly social togetherness we have always engendered at West Waterford. A call or a text to one of your buddies would be greatly appreciated. Look after yourselves and each other and hopefully it won’t be too long before we are back walking and swinging in the autumnal beauty of our beloved club. Annual General Meeting
As of now it looks as though we may not be in a position to hold our AGM this year.
No need to worry as our current officers and committee are willing to stay in place as long as required. Needless to say we will hold an AGM at the nearest possible opportunity. I was speaking with our incoming captain Edward Hickey recently and he is busy making contact with members of his new team for 2021. Edward is looking forward to his term in office and is prepared for any challenges that may arise.
Sanding of Fairways
During the closure we are hoping to complete the sanding of fairways and tee boxes. This is essential to the ongoing drainage of the fairways during the winter months. We would like to thank you for your continued support of our fundraising events without which we could not carry out this essential work.
World Handicapping System
Golf Ireland, the GUI and ILGU have confirmed that the World Handicap System will come into effect in Ireland from 2nd November, replacing the current Unified Handicapping System (CONGU).
The new World Handicap System will be averaged using the best 8 of the last 20 scores on your record. Further information will become available during the coming weeks and members should log on to Golfnet to access this information. With the introduction of WHS, HandicapMaster Ltd will be required by licence to pay for each clubs’ access to the WHS Platform when they use HandicapMaster in conjunction with the WHS handicapping service. All going well, the new service will be operational in time for the changeover on November 2nd.
More news on WHS in next weeks notes.
