Gents Club AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Gent’s club was be held in the clubhouse last Monday, November 21st. It was great to be back in the clubhouse again for our AGM, the last two AGMs having been carried out virtually because of Covid.

Proceedings were opened by outgoing Captain, Denis Herlihy, which was followed by a very comprehensive report of a successful golfing year at West Waterford Golf Club, by Honorary Secretary, Maurice Hallahan. The full details of Maurice’s report are available in the members area of the club website. Honorary Treasurer, Ray Bannon, then provided a detailed summary of the men’s club accounts for the year past.

Incoming Captain for 2023, Michael Cass, in his opening address to members, stated what an honour and privilege it is for him to be West Waterford Golf Club Captain for 2023. He then proceeded to outline his objectives for 2023 to the meeting. Michael also spoke about the unique achievement of having two members playing professionally on World Tours at the same time, and how proud the club is of Séamus Power & Gary Hurley. He wished them both well for the year ahead. Finally, he wished new Ladies Captain, Nora Flynn, and her committee a successful 2023.

13 Hole Stableford Nov 21st – 27th (including Round 1 Winter league)

Winner: Declan Walsh (18) 25pts (b7)

Winter League

Despite the unpredictable weather, our Winter League is underway. Round one will continue for another week, and we would ask team captains to contact their respective teams to ensure they have at least 4 scores for their team by the end of this round.

Following the first three rounds of singles stableford there will be a matchplay round over the holiday period. Team members must have played at least once and paid the initial entry fee to be eligible for the matchplay round.  All teams will participate in the matchplay, and bonus points will be awarded to all who participate.

On completion of the matchplay round there will be one more round of singles stableford before the top four teams overall progress to the semi-finals and final.

Full details of teams plus Rules and Format are available on the clubhouse notice board and have also been circulated to all on the WhatsApp list. Thank you to all who have played so far and again we ask all team members to make the effort to get at least one game in for round one.  Members can play any day during the week and re-entry is permitted.

Winter Rules

Due to the prevailing weather conditions, winter rules apply:

  • Placing on fairways & in the rough. You must mark the position of your ball and lift, clean, and place within 6 inches of your marker.
  • Club competitions, including the Winter league will be played over 13 holes.
  • All competitions are non-qualifying for handicap purposes.

Playing Handicap for winter

For the duration of Winter Rules (Nov. – Mar.) the handicap committee has introduced a 90% handicap limit.  To facilitate this, when you sign-in, using the Playing Handicap Table posted at the sign-in desk, for your handicap index, simply check what your 90% playing handicap is from the table.

Course Updates

Please keep an eye on the online timesheet and BRS updates as play may be interrupted at times due to the prevailing weather conditions.

Late Donal O Brien

It was with great shock and sadness that we learned of the passing of Donal O Brien on November 21st.  Since joining West Waterford in 1996 Donal portrayed all the attributes of a loyal club member.

A regular on weekends with his good friend Frankie Walsh, Donal was a great supporter of all club competitions and was always to the fore in all our fundraising events. Elected president in 2001 he relished the role with pride and enthusiasm.

The large group from the club present for the guard of honour on Sunday was testament to the esteem in which Donal was held at the club.  On behalf of the club, we extend our sincere sympathies to his wife Mary, to Aideen and Fergal and the extended family.  May Donal rest in eternal Peace.
