Captain’s Prize 2022

Despite the break in the weather we had a very good turnout for Denis Herlihy’s captains prize at the weekend.  The action got underway on Friday afternoon with Eoin Kiely carding a magnificent 66 nett to lead the qualifiers by just one shot from Colin Power 67.  In testing conditions on Saturday Brian Fox defied the elements recording a magnificent 69 just a single shot ahead of Dermot Drohan 70.  With the cut coming at 78 we had our 36 qualifiers for the shotgun start on Sunday.  They were joined by the top 3 gross qualifiers.  Our captain Denis was on hand throughout the weekend to ensure everything was going to plan and his wife Mary presented a beautiful arrangement on the table of Waterford Crystal prizes.  At 2pm on Sunday the shotgun sounded on schedule as the 39 contenders set out in quest of magnificent  first prize.  Congratulations to Brian Fox who carded a 68 for a combined score of 137 to claim the trophy.  Well done also to in form player David Dowling who took the gross prize with 153.  The clubhouse was full for the presentation of prizes on Sunday evening with most of the prizewinners present.  Captain Denis gave a rousing speech where he thanked everyone who contributed to a memorable weekend.  West Waterford golf club is in a good place at the moment.  The success stories of our two professionals, the comraderie of our members and the dedication of our captain all point to an exciting and successful future for our beloved club.  Onwards and  upwards together.  Thank you to Denis, Mary and Darragh for an inspirational weekend.

Gary Hurley claims maiden Alps Tour Win

Gary Hurley ended his near seven wait for his first professional win when he played his last four holes in four under par and closed with a five-under 67 to clinch a four stroke victory in the Alps de Andalucia at the weekend.  The West Waterford man turned professional after winning the Walker Cup in 2015 and spent endless hours perfecting his game technically and  physically  until he slowly turned his game around following the pandemic.  Inspired by the efforts of fellow West Waterford man Seamus Power and words of advice from the current world no 36 Gary has brought his game to a new level.  He has had two top 10’s in 11 starts last season and another four top seven finishes in his first 11 starts this year.  “I;ve been playing very well this year, it was just a matter of having everything click”  Gary collects €5.800 for his win and moves into 5th spot in the Order of Merit with the top 5 earning Challenge Tour cards next season.  “I was in a really good space this week.  Probably the best I:ve ever been.  Today I controlled my emotions very well.  I:m not surprised but I:m very happy.  What a wonderful weekend for Gary, his family, and for West Waterford Golf Club.

 Welcome Home Seamus

Following his recent successful run on the PGA Tour, Seamus Power is currently back in Ireland for a few weeks.  This is an opportunity to catch up with family and friends and also to attend to a number of promotional engagements.  On the golfing front Seamus will play in the Horizon Irish Open at Mount Juliet on Thursday.  Having finished tied 25th at the Travellers Championship at the weekend  Seamus is currently enjoying a good run of form and can justifiably fancy his chances in Mount Juliet.  “It’s probably my first  year on tour where at this time of the year I’m in a really good spot, not worried about Top 125 and all that sort of stuff.  That definitely helps, just easier to play a little freer, and thats showing in some of my scores.”  “Yeah it’s a fun stretch. I had U.S. Open last week and then going and playing the Irish Open next week and then the Open after that. It’s going to be a great stretch of golf, and I’m looking forward to it, and hopefully , I can keep it up over the weekend.”
