Gary Hurley Secures DP World Tour card

Wednesday Nov 16, 2022, marked a very special occasion for Gary Hurley and West Waterford golf club.  It was the culmination of a gruelling 108-hole Qualifying School Final stage when Gary secured his DP World Tour card in Spain.

Gary makes no secret of his mental struggles with the game of golf since he turned professional following the memorable Walker Cup success in 2015.  The manner in which he dealt with his problems has been well documented at this stage, so I see no need to comment other than to say he has persevered with the problem and is now in a much better place.  Gary’s resurrection from nowhere man to European Tour player alongside clubmate Séamus Power and Major winners Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry is one of the great feel-good Irish golfing stories of recent years.

On behalf of the members of West Waterford golf club we offer our congratulations to Gary on securing his place on the DP World Tour.  It took a combination of skill and mental strength to get through six challenging days.

We are all so proud of your achievement and thrilled for you and your family.

Another Top Five finish for Seamus Power on PGA Tour

Seamus took another giant step towards Ryder Cup selection when he finished tied fifth in the RSM Classic at Sea Island last weekend.  Entering the final round just 3 shots off the lead Seamus was making yet another bold bid for his third PGA Tour victory.  However following a great start, a mixed finish on the back 9 saw him finish the day with a four under 66 to leave him in a five way tie for fifth place on 15-under par.  The West Waterford man pockets $277,830 for his efforts and remains top of the FedEx Cup standings when the tour moves to Kapalua for the Sentry Tournament of Champions From January 5- 8th 2023.

Men’s Club AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Men’s club will be held in the clubhouse on Monday November 21st starting at 8pm.

Winter League

Despite the unpredictable weather conditions our Winter League is underway, and we had a good turnout for round one during the week. Round one will continue for another two weeks, and we would ask team captains to contact their respective teams to ensure they have at least 4 scores for their team by the end of this round.  Following the first three rounds of singles stableford we have introduced a matchplay round over the holiday period. Team members must have played at least once and paid the initial entry fee to be eligible for the matchplay round.  All teams will participate in the matchplay and bonus points will be awarded to all who participate.  On completion of the matchplay round we will have one more round of singles stableford before the top four teams overall progress to the semi finals and final.

Full details of teams plus Rules and Format are available on the clubhouse notice board, and are also being circulated to all on the WhatsApp list. Thank you to all who have played so far and again we ask all team members to make the effort to get at least one game in for round one.  Members can play any day during the week and re-entry is permitted.

Junior and Cadet Celebration Evening

On Friday evening last a large crowd gathered for our evening to celebrate the success of the Junior Academy in 2022.  Outstanding prizes were awarded to our Junior group followed by a graduation ceremony for our cadets to acknowledge their start in the game of golf.  The undoubted star of the show was DP World Tour player Gary Hurley who took time out of his busy schedule to present the prizes and Golf Ireland certificates to the kids.  Gary is certainly a wonderful role model for our young golfers to look up to not only as a golfer but even more importantly as an individual who is one of our own. The Junior volunteer group wish to sincerely thank Gary for his time on the night and extend our very best wishes for the year ahead.

Clubhouse Renovations

The recent redecoration of the clubhouse and office has been a huge success and is greatly appreciated by the members.  You will notice that many items have been moved around during the renovations.  The good news is that Pat Murphy and Denis Herlihy have undertaken to relocate the boards, pennants and priceless photos in an orderly fashion.  So keep an eye on the proceedings as you enter the clubhouse over the next few weeks.

Course Updates

Please keep an eye on the online timesheet and BRS updates as play may be interrupted at times due to the prevailing weather conditions.

Winter Handicaps 90%

For the duration of Winter Rules November to March the handicap committee has introduced a 90% handicap limit.  To facilitate this you will need to check your playing handicap based on the 90% Playing Handicap Table posted at the sign-in desk.  You simply check your handicap index from the list provided at sign-in and then check your handicap from the 90% Playing handicap List.

Winter Rules

Due to the prevailing weather conditions it has been necessary to introduce winter rules golf.  Placing is allowed on fairways and in the rough.  You must mark the position of your ball and lift, clean, and place within 6 inches of your marker.  For the foreseeable future club competitions, including the Winter league will be played over 13 holes.  All competitions are now non-qualifying for handicap purposes.
