Gary Hurley secures his Challenge Tour Card
Heading into last week’s Alps Tour Grand final in Moderna GC in Italy Gary Hurley occupied the fourth spot in the season long standings and had a cushion of just 2000 points from Stefano Mazzoli in 6th position. The race for promotion is always a thrilling one in sport and with the top 5 gaining their tour cards, Gary knew exactly what he had to do in the final qualifier. “A lot of preparation before the round comes for me away from the golf course and away from the range. It’s just about being ready to deal with whatever comes your way and being open to the challenge. A lot of things are going to happen this week, good bad and indifferent, but as long as I am prepared and have some good processes in place, then everything is going to be ok.” On paper the task was simple, win and he would receive a Challenge Tour card for next season, anything less than a high finish would leave his grip on one of the top 5 Alps Tour Order of Merit vulnerable at the eleventh hour.
A battling level par 72 in his final round was enough for Gary to make the leap to the Challenge Tour next season as he claimed the final promotion spot on the Alps Tour Order of Merit with a share of 8th place. He finished with a closing bogey on 18 but the hard work had already been done with back nines of 31 and 32 over the first 36 holes.
It’been a terrific season for the West Waterford man who picked up a maiden tour victory in June at the Alps de Andalucia. A top 25 finish on the Challenge Tour in Switzerland set him up nicely for his return to the Alps Tour action. Gary has been a model of consistency this year with one win and six top seven finishes while only missing two cuts.
Promotion to the Challenge Tour represents a great opportunity to kickstart his career as he approaches his prime in his 30’s. A new outlook on golf and a more patient attitude has also reaped the rewards for Gary who is certainly becoming one of the great thinkers in the game.
Members and friends will have the opportunity to meet Gary on Saturday next at 8pm when he returns to West Waterford where it all began over two decades ago.
