Gary Hurley produces strong finish to earn his Alps Tour card for 2020

Gary Hurley ended a difficult year on a high when he produced a hot finish to grab his Alps Tour card at the weather-reduced Qualifying School in Spain. Just nine weeks after undergoing foot surgery, the former Walker Cup star (26) birdied three of his last six holes to tie for 15th on three-under at La Cala Resort. The 54-hole quest to finish in the top 35 and ties was reduced to just 36 holes after heavy rain forced officials to suspended play on Friday and Saturday. But after slipping back to one-over-par for the tournament with just six holes to play, Hurley birdied the 13th, 15th and 17th to card a one-under 71 on the America Course and earn Category 6 membership of the Alps Tour for 2020. Considering Gary is just back after surgery on the third metatarsal bone in his foot 9 weeks ago qualification for the tour must be seen as a positive result and augurs well for his chances in 2020. ‘’It feels great to be honest considering just over two months ago I was on the operating table,’’ said Gary. ‘’It was a difficult, stop/start week with the delays but was nice to finish strong to make it in. ‘’Things are starting to move in the right direction for me again which is brilliant.’’

Comeragh Oil Winter League

Round 2 commenced on Friday 27th January with players glad to get back to normal following the well earned Christmas break. Considering the amount of rain over the past week the course is in good condition and members are appreciative of being able to get out for the 13 hole competition. This round will run for two weeks after which the situation will be reviewed before we progress to round 3. Following the qualifying rounds the top 8 teams will progress to the match-play stage when the real action starts. As the table stands only 6 points separate the 8th and 12th positions. Any team with a few 30 point scores could make a big leap into the qualifying spot. You can play any day from Monday to the following Sunday and you are also entered in the weekly club competition. Re-entry is allowed with your best score counting. Members not playing in the league are most welcome to play in the weekly competition. We ask you to get out and support your team and your club and wish you all good golfing in 2020.

We wish Diarmuid and Phil the very best of luck as they lead the ladies and gents into 2020.

Keeping it Local

We would like to thank all our loyal sponsors for their generosity down the years. Without them we would struggle to run our competitions. As you know all our sponsors are included on our club prize vouchers, which means that the money goes back to our sponsors and stays in the locality. We urge all our members to support our sponsors and to buy local whenever possible.

Christmas Gift Vouchers Available

Gift vouchers can be purchased at the shop in West Waterford. Why not treat a friend to a game of golf or a voucher to be used against members annual subscription. Call and talk to Gillian who will be glad to help with your requirements.

All at West Waterford would like to convey our sympathies to the wife, children and extended family of the late Dan McGrath.

We also sympathise with David Cotter and the extended family on the passing of his father Thomas Cotter. May Dan and Thomas Rest in Peace.
