Gary Hurley in contention in NSW
02 February 2012
The Irish challenge at the New South Wales Medal Tournament intensified considerably on Day 2 of the tournament, with Reeve Whitson, Gary Hurley and Niall Gorey all moving into contention for the title with 36 holes to play.
Gary Hurley, who lay in a tie for third after a first round 70, carded a 74 in difficult conditions on a demanding Mona Vale GC to consolidate his position, three shots off the pace in a tie for fourth.
He was joined on 144 by Reeve Whitson, who added a second consecutive 72, and both players are one shot ahead of Niall Gorey who carded one of the best rounds of the day at Mona Vale, a one-under 71, to lie in a tie for eighth.
Dermot McElroy ground his way to a 76 to make the cut on the number. All four players will be hoping to at least finish in the top-32 in the event, which would entitle them to compete in the New South Wales Match Play Championship next week in Elanora.
