Last Wednesday, West Waterford Golf Club played host to the Munster final of Golf Irelands Eleanor Tivy Cup, welcoming 120 ladies from 40 different clubs across the province for what proved to be a memorable day of golf and hospitality.

The day itself was a resounding success for the club, with visiting players and Golf Ireland officials alike praising the course presentation, organisation and warmth of the welcome extended to every team that came through the gates.

But the real drama was saved for the finish. As scores came in from across the course, it became clear the destination of the cup would go right down to the wire, with Co. Tipperary GC (Dundrum) leading the way with 76 pts total from early in the day. However, when the last cards were totted up, it was our own West Waterford ladies’ team who came with a late run to take the title, edging it by a single point, with a magnificent 77 pts.

Winning a Munster pennant is no small feat, and the club is enormously proud of the achievement of Marie T Curran, Jean Conway and Ciara Donnelly, and their Team Manager Mary Herlihy. Well done, ladies — we look forward to hanging another pennant on the wall of this fantastic club.

Eithne shines in Bernie Twomey Memorial

On Sunday, our ladies braved heavy showers to play the final Major of their golfing calendar, a competition that holds a special place in the club’s history, honouring the memory of Bernie Twomey. Bernie was West Waterford’s first-ever Lady Captain, a position she held for two years, and it was her energy and vision that drove the formation and early progress of the Ladies Club here. Each year’s competition is as much a celebration of that legacy as it is a golfing competition, and it’s fitting that it closes out the ladies’ Major season.

After recent rain, the course was playing a good deal longer than it had in previous weeks, with recent rain adding a few extra yards to every approach. That didn’t stop some excellent scoring, however.

When Lady Captain Delia announced the results, it was Eithne Ashby who took the honours, posting an excellent 39 points to narrowly pip Jean Conway, who also carded 39 points but had to settle for second on the day.

Thanks to Bernie Twomey’s son Dermot and her grandson Billy, who came along to present the prizes and keep the day’s connection to Bernie’s memory very much alive.

Irish Injured Jockeys Golf Classic at West Waterford

On Wednesday, September 16th, West Waterford Golf Club will host the Irish Injured Jockeys Golf Classic with shotgun starts at 9.30am and 2pm. The format will be a Champagne Scramble, followed by dinner in the Albatross Restaurant.

Irish Injured Jockeys provides vital confidential support to riders coping with career-ending injuries and other personal challenges, working alongside medical experts to help get them the care they need. The event carries extra resonance locally given the club’s connections to the world of racing, with club Chairman and local trainer Paddy Corkery. Speaking to Racing TV recently, Irish Injured Jockeys General Manager Michael Higgins spoke of the charity’s work supporting jockeys through those difficult moments, underlining why fundraising days like this one matter so much to the racing community.

Teams of four can enter for €450, with proceeds going to support the charity’s work.

Open Competition Sponsored by Coolcormuck Residents Next Weekend

Next weekend (Sat 5^th & Sun 6^th), we will host the annual Open mixed 18-hole Stableford competition, kindly sponsored by our neighbours, the Coolcormuck Residents’ Group.

The competition is open to members and visitors alike, so whether you’re a regular face on the course or looking for an excuse to come and try it for the first time, all are very welcome to enter.

Friday Evening Fun Scrambles Continue

We were delighted to see some of our Get into Golf participants again at last Friday evening’s scramble. Remember, there’s nothing to be shy about. Everyone is welcome to come along for a bit of craic — whether you’re a long-time member, new to the club, or a Get into Golfer, it’s all about having fun. And you might even win a prize. Registration from 5:30pm.

From next week, our Seanóirí group will move to Wednesday mornings at 10:30am, and every Wednesday morning thereafter. So, whether it’s the golf or just the tea, coffee and a few nice treats you’re after, all members are warmly encouraged to come along.
