Youth Academy & Driving Range – ‘Buy a Brick’

It’s full steam ahead at the driving range, with planning permission for the covered bays and lighting having now been granted. Work on the uncovered and grass bays is already well visible to members, and the focus now shifts to getting the covered bays completed and operational, with Trackman, by mid-summer. When finished, this will be the only facility of its kind within a 40km radius — something the whole West Waterford community can be proud of, and one that will serve golfers of all ages for generations to come.

The generosity shown by members, supporters, and local businesses to the ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign so far has been humbling, and we are grateful to each and every one of you. But we’re not over the line yet. With €120,000-plus needed to bring this project to completion, now is the moment for every member to step up and play their part. This is not someone else’s club — it’s yours. Don’t sit on the sidelines while others carry the load.

If you haven’t already bought your brick, please do so this week. It could not be easier — you can contribute via the club website, in the pro shop, or directly to our bank account. Full details are available in the clubhouse and will be shared across the WhatsApp groups.

If you are not a member of the club, and would like to support this wonderful community facility, contact Jim McGrath on 087 251 8941 or the club on 058 43216.

Every brick counts. Let’s get this done — together.

Club Classic

Reminder that our annual Club Classic, runs from Thursday 21st to Sunday 24th May. The Club Classic is one of the most important events in the club calendar, supporting the running of our club.

The competition format will be a full Scramble, open to teams of three — gents, ladies, mixed and junior — ensuring a fun and inclusive day out for members and visitors alike.

Jolly Boys Outing – Co. Tipperary Golf Club, Dundrum

On Friday the 8th, the Jolly Boys assembled, boarded the bus, and set off for Co. Tipperary Golf Club in Dundrum — blissfully unaware of what lay ahead.

The first casualty of the day came before a single club was swung. Our Ayatollah, sorry Captain, flatly refused to reveal the competition format, leaving grown men staring into the middle distance, psychologically broken before the first tee. New members Kyle and David Mc, displaying an instinct for self-preservation that seasoned members have long since abandoned, positioned themselves strategically at the back of the bus, hoping the madness wouldn’t reach them. It would.

Upon arrival, the troops were well fed — a promising early mark for chief organiser Paul Kelleher. With bellies full and spirits high, veteran Justin took new member Gary under his wing for the day. What exactly was whispered into Gary’s ear over those 18 holes remains classified, but let’s just say we’ll all be watching Gary very closely over the coming weeks. Credit where it’s due — despite their recent travails, the team at Dundrum had the course in immaculate condition. Which made it even more galling for those who still couldn’t find a fairway.

As for the cream rising to the top — step forward Mark Coles, man of the big hat and an apparently scarcely believable scorecard. There were mutterings about whether Bertie or Micheál had actually been counting properly, but chief pencil-man Gilly confirmed it: winner alright. Meanwhile, at the other end of the leaderboard, the sour milk was plentiful. Dundrum had taken no prisoners.

Post-golf, Paul had arranged a fantastic spread in Bertie’s — not that Bertie’s — and his stock rose considerably around the bus. A swift democratic vote on the way in confirmed that only those present for the grub would be eligible for prizes. The Ayatollah — sorry, Captain — graciously agreed. This decision, it must be said, produced some spectacular losers.

The return journey included a not so brief pit stop in Ballymac, where those who had struggled on the course attempted to restore some dignity at the pool table (we won’t mention Niall’s name). Results of that endeavour have not been officially confirmed. We arrived home just in time for a late one in Alice’s.

What a day it was. A massive thank you to Paul Kelleher for his efforts, endurance, and seemingly bottomless patience in pulling it all together. And to Captain Brian — fair play for the imagination on the prizes.

Inter-Club Matchplay

On bank holiday Monday, the club’s Mixed Fourball team had a great win against Williamstown GC at West Waterford. After a very tight match, finishing 2 – 2, we prevailed on 19th. Next match is at home vs Tramore on Mon 1st June at 1:30pm. Well done to Mary Lou Carroll & Paul Kelleher, Ciara Donnelly & David Condon, Aisling Shanahan and Conor Blackwell, and Mary Fahey and David McCarthy.

Unfortunately, our Boys Junior Foursomes lost out to Tipperary Golf Club in the first round of their competition in Tipperary on Sunday last. Despite competing well, the Tipperary lads came strong in the end. Well done to Anthony, Ruben, Conor and Keelan on putting in a great performance.

Other upcoming fixtures, our Ladies Minor Foursomes on 20th May at 3pm at home to Tramore GC. And in the next round of the Pierce Purcell, the lads will be at home to Tipperary GC (to be played by 24th May).
