Barton Shield dream ends at the semi-final

There was plenty of optimism heading to Tipperary GC last weekend as our Barton Shield team went to compete at the Munster (East) regional finals — and for a while, it looked like it might just be our year.

Saturday morning got off to the best possible start, with the lads edging out a tough Lee Valley side 2 up to book their place in the quarter-final that same afternoon. A quick bite of lunch and straight back out to face Thurles GC, in another match that went right down to the wire, before setting up a Sunday morning semi-final against Douglas GC.

That’s where the run came to an end. Douglas, with Irish Internationals in their ranks, went on to win the whole competition — so there’s no shame in it. Our lads gave it everything, and the club owes a big thank you to Eoin, Philip, Conor, Luke, David, Conor and Thomas for representing the club all weekend.

Attention now turns to the rest of our inter-club campaigns. The Jimmy Bruen team are back in action against — who else — Douglas GC, in the last 16 on Sunday 26th July in Youghal. And on the bank holiday Monday, our Pierce Purcell side face Cobh GC in the Munster (East) final at Tramore GC, with a 12.20pm tee time. Best of luck to both teams.

Date for your Diary: Ciara Donnelly’s President’s Prize 2026

The men’s competition kicks off with qualifying over three days, Wednesday 22nd through to Friday 24th July, with the top 45 scorers going through to contest the final round on Saturday 25th July.

The ladies will have their competition on Sunday 26th July.

Prizes for both men and ladies will be presented on the Sunday evening, 26th July. More details to follow next week.

Ladies Outing to Ballyneety GC

Bags are being packed and weather forecast is being checked, as our ladies are preparing to hit the road this Friday, for their annual outing to Ballyneety GC this year, home of the 2027 Junior Ryder Cup no less. With the sun continuing to shine it will hopefully point to a day of good craic, good golf, and hopefully a few putts to drop.

Wishing all our ladies well in the Treaty County — although friendly warning, ladies: spend long enough there and you might come home better with a hurley than a 7-iron.

Killeagh GAA Classic

The club played host last week to the biggest fundraising classic anywhere in the country, with over 160 teams coming through the gates — and it did not disappoint. Run by Ray Rochford and his committee, this event has been a fixture at West Waterford for more than 30 years now, and this year was bigger than ever, drawing over 450 people to the club.

We couldn’t have asked for better conditions either. With the sun splitting the stones for most of the four days, the course was shown off at its very best, thanks to the immaculate work of Morrie and his team on the greenkeeping side. Athula and his crew matched that with food of the highest standard throughout, and by all accounts everyone who took part had a brilliant time. A big thank you is owed to all our staff for pulling this off — to Colin and the team in the pro shop, and to Athula and his staff in the bar and kitchen, who between them kept the club running like clockwork and put West Waterford’s best foot forward for four straight days.

Keep an eye on Killeagh GAA’s social media pages over the coming days, where the results will be posted.

Competition Results

Full details are available at the clubhouse notice board, the pro shop, the club website, or through any member of the management committee. This is a project that will benefit members, families, and the wider West Waterford community for years to come. The club encourages all members and supporters to get involved.
