Intermediate & Minor Scratch Cups
This weekend we hosted our annual Intermediate & Minor Scratch Cups, kindly sponsored by The Moorings Bar & Restaurant, Dungarvan. We had a great entry for these two popular competitions, and we would like to thank the many visitors who came to West Waterford to participate. In the Intermediate Scratch Cups, local knowledge prevailed, with the first 3 places filled by West Waterford GC members, with former President David Condon coming out on top. In the Minor Scratch Cup, the visitors took the honours, with the popular Joe O’Flaherty from Lismore GC claiming the spoils.
Special thanks again to Marie Quinn & her staff of the Moorings Bar & Restaurant, for their ongoing sponsorship of these very popular competitions.

Junior Captain’s Prize 20th August 2024
The big fixture this week was the Junior Captain’s Prize (Anthony O’Donnell). In bright & blustery conditions, tricky for scoring, there were some super scores brought in. None more so than Tom Osborne who carded a brilliant 45pts to claim 1st place and the title of 2024 Junior Captain’s Prize Champion! Huge congrats Tom! In second came Ted Lynch with a super 42pts, a score worthy of winning on another day. In third, was Mick Curran on 38pts, continuing his consistent improvement this year. Then with an outstanding gross score of 35pts was Junior Captain himself, Anthony O’Donnell. In 4th place on 34pts was young Daniel Murphy, who pipped his brother Jayden on a countback. A special mention also for Rueben O’Brien, who despite injuring his leg last week, came to see the boys complete their rounds. A lovely gesture from the young man.
Result
2nd Ted Lynch (25) 42pts
3rd Mick Curran (26) 38pts
Gross Anthony O’Donnell (3) 35pts
- 4th Daniel Murphy (48) 34pts
The prizes will be presented later in the year along with our two matchplay competitions, where the 2024 Junior Golfer of the Year will also be announced.
With the boys and girls returning to school after the Summer, our Tuesday morning golf is over for the year. Our Saturday evening golf will continue for another few weeks and the calendar will be updated to reflect this.
Life on the Professional Circuit, with Séamus Power & Gary Hurley
This week, we were delighted to hear the news of Séamus Power’s engagement. On behalf of everyone in the club, we send Séamus & Casey our congratulations and wish them the very best for their future together.
Only Gary was in action this week, at the Danish Golf Championship in Aarhus, Denmark. After an opening round of 72, Gary needed to a solid 2nd round to make the cut. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen for him on day 2, returning a second round of 76 to miss the cut by 5 shots. Next week, Gary will be playing in the Rosa Challenge Tour event, in Konopiska, (near Katowice) Poland. We wish him good luck for the week ahead.
