West Waterford Golf Club News – w/c 18th August 2024

Lady Captain’s Prize

After much planning, organizing and anticipation our Lady Captain Bridget Blackwell’s Prize to the Ladies got under way on Friday afternoon in perfect golfing conditions. Lady Captain Bridget welcomed all the participants and saw everyone off to the first tee box. By late afternoon there was a decisive leader in Eithne Ashby who shot a wonderful 65 nett. Eithne was in the final group on Saturday with partners Mary Lou Carroll and Finola Butler. The second group consisted of Geraldine Hickey, Ciara Donnelly and Marian Hilliard.

On day 2, Lady Captain Bridget and her family provided refreshments on the 9th hole which were very welcomed and enjoyed by the now weary golfers. By later afternoon anticipation was growing in the clubhouse as to who would be the recipient of the 2024 Lady Captain’s Prize, and it transpired that Eithne Ashby and Geraldine Hickey had the same score. However, on countback, Geraldine was the worthy winner with 140 nett. Geraldine is a very popular winner as our hard-working PRO and previously won the Captain’s Prize in 2022.

The presentation of prizes was held later in the clubhouse after a lovely meal presented by Clodagh and her staff. It was great to see such a good turnout of lady members, Bridget’s family and friends in our clubhouse, which was beautifully decorated for the occasion. The night continued with celebrations, music and chat.

Congratulations to our winner Geraldine and all the worthy prize-winners.

A huge thank you to our Lady Captain Bridget on such a well-organized and successful weekend and best wishes for the rest of the season.

Junior Academy News

  • Last Tuesday, 6 of our boys travelled to Tramore GC for the final fixture of the 2024 Deise League. In sunny weather, West Waterford featured in the prizes. In 3rd place was Tom Halpin with a great score of 38pts and in 5th place was Daniel Murphy also on 38pts but beaten on a countback. These were two great performances from boys who have just recently attained a handicap, playing a new course from the white tees. Well done to both.

This Tuesday, Anthony O’Donnell will host his Junior Captain’s Prize for the coveted Pat Murphy Perpetual Trophy. All boys will be hoping for their best form for the biggest individual prize of the Junior calendar and best of luck to all. Presentation of the prize, along with other major competitions will be held later which will be communicated in due course.

Life on the Professional Circuit, with Séamus Power & Gary Hurley

On the PGA Tour, Séamus Power was competing in the FedEx St Jude Classic, the first of the season ending playoffs, having qualified in the top 70 on the FedEx points list. To make this week’s BMW Championship, he needed a top 5 finish. However, despite rounds of 67, 70, 66 and 67, and an excellent T10 finish, it unfortunately was not enough to see him qualify for next week’s playoff, finishing 56th on the FedEx standings, with only the top 50 going forward. We are likely to see Séamus next in Europe, with the Irish Open at Royal County Down on his agenda. After that, his next PGA Tour appearance will be likely be the Black Desert Championship in Utah, in October.

Last week, Gary Hurley was in action on the DP World tour, at the D&D REAL Czech Masters in Prague. However, with rounds of 74 & 71, unfortunately he failed to make the weekend cut. This coming week, Gary plays in the Danish Golf Championship in Aarhus.
