Power captures third Youths title

Few of today’s golfers can lay claim to holding the best record in a Golfing Union of Ireland National Championship but following his victory at Lisburn Golf Club on Friday West Waterford’s Seamus

Seamus_Power33Power’s record narrowly eclipses McHenry’s on account of the silver medal won by the former as runner-up to Gareth Shaw at Royal Tara in 2006 in between his other two victories at Portumna in 2005 and on his home course last year.

It was the manner of the Waterford man’s win that will be long remembered by those who witnessed it at Lisburn Golf Club. Power opened with a 69 to lead the way after his first round and simply never relented. A course record equalling 67, which featured nine birdies, followed in round two and he again recorded the best round of the field in the third round – firing a two under par 70 in miserable conditions.

Holding a nine stroke lead entering the final round in was simply a matter of posting a solid score and that’s precisely what Power achieved – recording a 71 to run out the winner by 11 strokes. It was the second widest margin of victory in the history of the event - bettered only by Mark Gannon’s (Co Louth) 14 shot win in Athlone in 1971.
