Ryder Cup at Myrtle Beach 2009

A group of nine club members along with Jack Elstead from Dungarvan GC made the annual trip to Myrtle Beach South Carolina on November 5th.  Hopes were high for ten days of fun in the sun and some serious golf at the best courses in the area. Alas with a few exceptions neither the golf nor the weather measured up to expectations. This year saw the launch of the competition for the magnificent Justin Spratt Trophy kindly donated by Justin, in association with Molly Darcy’s bar.

A Ryder Cup style format saw the visitors take on the natives for the coveted prize. The USA team signaled their intentions on day one, and with the help of two defectors namely Brendan and Willie, jumped into an early lead. The following three rounds saw the Irish stage the expected comeback.  Heroic efforts from Phil Kinsella, Justin Spratt, Noel Murray and Michael O Dwyer combined with a Man of the Match performance from Jack Elstead kept the Irish in touch. In the end the considerably older and more experienced US team held out for an historic victory. Despite the defeat there were some notable individual performances from the Irish squad.  Ollie Broderick was pipped at the post for a category prize and had to settle for second (last) place, fighting off a strong challenge from Aidan Spratt, Pat Power and Ray Spratt. Negotiations are presently underway with John Carroll in an effort to recapture the trophy next year.  Training is due to start early in the New Year. Finally we would like to congratulate the victorious USA team.

Well done to Jim Cullinan and Peter Rossiter for organizing the event and a sincere thank you to all concerned for a most enjoyable visit.  Roll on 2010.
