Since the 2009 Sunshine Classic, West Waterford Golf Club has achieved another milestone in the short history of the club, when we were voted Club of the Year 2009, by the G.U.I Munster Branch. The award is in recognition of the club’s achievements by our club members and management working together and the promotion of the game of golf especially amongst the youth.
The purpose of the Classic is to raise funds that will make an essential contribution to the core activities of our Club ensuring the success continues into the future as follows:
-
Delivering a Youth Programme which has culminated in our Senior Team winning the Munster Senior Cup and gallantly losing in the closest of finishes in the All Ireland Final at Tullamore last September. In addition, Gary Hurley is now on the Irish Panel while Seamus Power will finish his studies in the U.S.A in May having achieved glory in golf and excelled in his studies. Several groups of young players are showing the same potential and their development will continue along the lines of past Youth Programmes.
-
Running of our Adult and Junior Club Teams and their development.
-
Assisting with the ongoing development of the golf course. Both members and visitors appreciate and regularly comment on the excellent design of the course and the high standards of maintenance. This work must continue to ensure the course is of the highest standard for the enjoyment of our members and visitors.
The prizes on offer are worth over €8,500, in total thanks to the generosity of Killester Travel, West Waterford Golf Club Management and two club members who wish to remain anonymous.
-
A fabulous 4 person Killester Travel Holiday Voucher with a value of €500 for each member of the winning GUI/ILGU team.
-
A Prize for Best Gross
-
Free Draw for a prize of 12 month membership for an all visitor team
-
Free Draw for a prize of 12 month membership for visitors on a member/visitor team.
Teams may be Ladies, Gents or Mixed. The format is a 4 person classic, with 2 scores to count per hole. The entry fee has been reduced by 25% to €120 per team of 4 and the cost of a tee box sponsorship is €50. The re-entry fee will be €20 per player.
Last year over 150 teams entered and enjoyed playing in the Classic competition demonstrating the goodwill that exists for our fundraising activities. We look forward to your continued support this year and we are mindful of the current economic climate. We also look forward to serving your needs in golf and business during 2010 and for many years ahead. A member of the Golf Classic committee will be in contact with all members and friends about the event.

The opening of this fine, Dungarvan development in 1993, was a particularly proud occasion for the designer, Eddie Hackett, who was seeing his 100th course become ready for play. The course is located in the Brickey Valley, just outside Dungarvan.
A dramatic backdrop to the beautifully rolling terrain is provided by the Comeragh and Knockmealdown Mountains to the north and east and the Drum Hills immediately to the south.
The 6,712 yard, Par 72 championship course is challenging enough to warrant the use of the front tees instead. An interesting feature is that the first nine holes are laid out on a large plateau featureing a lovely stream which comes into play at the 3rd and 4th holes. The Brickey river traverses the southern boundary and features on the challenging 2nd, 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th holes.
