Gents Notes for week ending 14th October 2007

Seamus Power comes good in America

Seamus Power shot the lights out to return a school record breaking score of 198 for 3 rounds and win the individual title at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate Championship at the Old Overton Golf Club last week. In his four seasons at East Tennessee State University, Walker Cup player now recently turned professional Rhys Davies spent his time rewriting the men’s golf record books. Well it hasn’t taken long for one of his more impressive marks to fall to our own Seamus Power. Seamus fired a final round 4 under par 67 to finish tied for the individual title with the host Club’s Mark Harrell both ending the 54 hole tournament with a 15 under par total of 198. “Our coach Fred Warren reminded me of Rhys’ record yesterday, and told me it was out there so I was glad to make some putts and get it” said Seamus, who has now won two individual Championships in his time thus far at East Tennessee State University, including the 2007 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. “The Conference Tournament did not have as strong a field as this week’s tournament, so it’s good to do it against the top teams and individuals. I was only 1 under par with 5 holes to play, but was able to birdie 14, 15 and 16 to get to 15 under par” Seamus stated on completion of his final round. ETSU head coach Fred Warren said the key to Seamus’s efforts was his consistency throughout the tournament. “Today he played a really solid round and it was a very fine performance from start to finish in the tournament” Warren said. “Unfortunately, the rest of the guys struggled and the team did not fare well, but I’m proud of Seamus and his win in a very good field”.

Open Qualifier kindly Sponsored by Al Eile Stud (Grand Final)

The timesheet for the Grand Final of the Al Eile Stud Open qualifier which takes place on Sunday 21st October is now available. All qualifiers thus far have been notified and one and all are urged to telephone West Waterford on 058-43216 or 058-41475 as soon as possible to secure a tee-time for the Grand Final. The timesheet for the Grand Final which is an 18-hole Stableford competition is running from 9.30 am to 1.50pm. The presentation of prizes for the Grand Final and also the individual Wednesday winners will take place on Sunday 21st October in the Clubhouse at 6.15.

Names only on Timesheets and Cancelled Tee-times

With more limited time available for play and increased playing numbers, the practice of putting down a name +1 or +2 is no longer acceptable. With immediate effect +1 or +2 on singles timesheets will be removed. Only individual names will suffice as this facilitates the smooth running of the timesheet, by identifying who is actually booked in to play and with whom. All members are also urged to telephone the office, at the earliest opportunity, if they wish to cancel a tee time that they have previously booked, in the interest of fairness to all. Please remember: Players with their names on the timesheet have priority on the 1st tee.

Quiz Night on Friday 26th October

All members and their friends are encouraged to come along to support this event which takes place on Friday 26th October at West Waterford Golf Club. All proceeds are to support the fundraising efforts of staunch and loyal club member and incoming President for 2008 Bertie Hallahan who is supporting a team of builders who are going to build houses for people in need in the townships of Capetown, South Africa under the auspices of the Niall Mellon Township Trust for 2007.

Dungarvan Golf Triangle

A major selling point of our three courses, Dungarvan Golf Club, Gold Coast Golf Club and ourselves West Waterford Golf Club is that we are all within 5 minutes drive of Dungarvan town center. The “Dungarvan Golf Triangle” effectively, allows you to purchase a ticket that enables you to play each of the three courses, Monday to Friday for the combined price of €80, and in this era of high green fee rates, this represents good value. ‘The Dungarvan Golf Triangle’ is being advertised through all the usual mediums and is on sale in each of the three golf clubs. Tickets are valid up to 31st December 2007.

Annual General Meetings

The Annual General Meetings of both the Ladies and the Men’s Club will take place on Wednesday 28th November at 8pm in the Clubhouse. All members are requested to attend.
