Gents Notes for week ending 1st July 2007

Double Delight for Seamus Power as he lifts Second Irish Youths’ Title

It was always going to be the biggest week in the short history of West Waterford Golf Club; and a defining one for its star golfer Seamus Power. The staging of the Irish Youths’ Championship and the International match between Scotland and Ireland was a huge honor and no small challenge for the club. Blessed with decent weather, the tournament got off to an auspicious start on Wednesday when the powerful Scottish team signaled their intentions with an emphatic win over the Irish, 6 matches to 3.

On Thursday morning, Seamus Power set off in quest of his second Youths’ title in 3 years. Having lifted the title in 2005 in Portumna, expectations were high, but the weight of performing before his home supporters was always going to be a challenge. But in round one, Seamus did not disappoint firing a course record 68, to lead by two. In the afternoon round, he played steady golf for a round of 71, to hold an overnight lead of two shots from newly crowned Scottish Amateur Champion, Scott Borrowman and his fellow team-mate Andrew Culverwell.

On Friday morning, Seamus got off to the best possible start with birdies on the 1st and 2nd, but the highly talented +4 handicap Scotsman played relentless golf to reduce the gap to one at lunchtime. In the final round, Seamus again birdied the 1st to make the gap two, only to see Borrowman birdie the 7th and 8th to level matters. At this stage, one could feel the tension in the huge gallery that followed the match, and when the Scot birdied the 12th, Seamus was behind for the first time in the tournament. The punishing finishing stretch would surely expose a weakness in either player. And from the middle of the fairway on the 14th, the Scot found water, and Power’s par saw them draw level again. A stunning birdie on 15 for the West Waterford man raised hopes of an historic victory. This was confirmed on the long par 5, 16th when Barrowman's drive found an unplayable lie in the woods to the right. His double bogey gave Seamus a three-shot cushion and a comfortable stroll into the history books.

It was a momentous occasion for Seamus and all at West Waterford. At the presentation ceremony, President-elect of the GUI Barry Doyle complimented all who made the championship such an outstanding success and looked forward to other major events over this magnificent golf course. Let the celebrations begin!

Following the International match, there was a dinner and presentation attended by both teams and officials from the respective golfing unions together with officers of the host Club.

The main event commenced on Thursday morning at 7am as the field assembled for the Irish Youths Championship for 36 holes of golf with the top 36 and ties going forward for another 36 holes on Friday. There was an air of expectation within the Club as our own Seamus Power was among the leading contenders and he certainly did not disappoint his large band of followers.

The presentation of prizes for the Irish Youths Championship 2007 took place immediately after play in the Clubhouse and the speakers included the Chairman of the Munster Branch G.U.I. Sean McMahon, the President Elect of the Golfing Union of Ireland Barry Doyle and the Captain of West Waterford Golf Club, Mr. Michael O’Dwyer.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members who volunteered for the numerous tasks associated with the smooth running of such a prestigious event from car parking attendants, to locker room staff and especially the junior members who were in action as caddies and ball spotters.
