Gents Notes for week ending 22nd April 2007

Seamus Power shoots the lights out to sweep the Atlantic Sun Men’s Golf Championship

Seamus Power captured the Atlantic Sun Men’s Golf Championship, and also helped power the No.13 ranked ETSU men’s golf team to its record 18th conference title and first ever Atlantic Sun Conference championship on Wednesday afternoon at The Golf Club at Sanctuary Cove USA. Seamus, who enjoyed a hole-in-one during Tuesday’s second round, finished at 3 under par 210 (73-67-70) for the tournament, two strokes better than North Florida’s Michael O’Neal.

Meanwhile, Seamus’ ETSU teammates also helped lift the Buccaneers to the team win, as senior Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) posted back-to-back 68s to finish tied for third, while junior Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) finished tied for fifth place. The Buccs ended the event with a team score of 16-over-par 868 (307-278-283) to finish 14 strokes better than second place UNF. With the victory, ESTU earns the A-Sun’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.

“It was a good day and the guys played really well,” said head coach Fred Warren, who has directed the Bucs to 13 conference championships in his time at ESTU, “We were able to pull away on the front nine and hold that advantage the rest of the way. We’re really proud of Seamus. He played very solid to become the first freshman in our program to win a conference championship.” Seamus, who used a 29 on the back nine Tuesday to build his lead, said he had one eye on O’Neal, but also kept his sights on his teammates Davies and Shaw. “Obviously, I was watching the guy in second place, but it was a good competition within our team as well,” said Seamus, who collected his first collegiate win. “I’m very happy to have had a couple good days on the course. As a team, all five of us are coming together at the right time.”

This victory is another major milestone on Seamus’s career path and he has certainly found his feet on the other side of the Atlantic in no uncertain terms. All at West Waterford Golf Club are delighted for Seamus, his family and friends.

Dungarvan Golf Triangle

Golf tourism as we all know is now a big business in Ireland and the Dungarvan area is ideally placed to garner its share of this ever-expanding market. A major selling point of our three courses, Dungarvan Golf Club, Gold Coast Golf Club and ourselves West Waterford Golf Club is that we are all within 5 minutes drive of Dungarvan town center. The “Dungarvan Golf Triangle” effectively, allows you to purchase a ticket that enables you to play each of the three courses, Monday to Friday for the combined price of €80, and in this era of high green fee rates, this represents good value. ‘The Dungarvan Golf Triangle’ is being advertised through all the usual mediums and is on sale in each of the three golf clubs. Tickets are valid up to 31st December 2007.

Dungarvan Golf International in association with Michael Ryan (Saltan Properties) and Bulmers

Following feedback from previous competitors and extensive discussions between the 3 local golf clubs, the Classic will undergo some changes in date and formats to provide fresh impetus to the event. The 2007 Classic is taking place on the 12th, 13th and 14th June 2007, for information on the event please contact the Tournament Co-coordinator Marie Curran on 058-42870 or 087- 2347918.
