Gents Notes for week ending 4th February 2007
Seamus Power starts 2007 Season in America in fine style:
Even though it was Seamus’s first outing of the Spring Collegiate season, he wasted no time in proving in no uncertain terms that he belonged at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate. Seamus finished the third and final round of the event with a 3 under par 68 thus ending the tournament with 3 sub 70 rounds (69, 66, and 68 = 203) to claim joint runner-up position in an elite field of the top amateurs in American Collegiate golf. East Tennessee State University Head Coach Fred Warren was fulsome in his praise for Seamus following the event. “Everything just came together at the right time” Seamus said following his final round, “We just had enough time between Christmas and now to practice and get ready. I hit a lot of fairways the last couple of days which was important because this course was unlike any other I’ve played. It was very strange hitting from fairway to fairway with desert everywhere. As a team it was good to see us score well. Seamus will return to action in late February at the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan. As envisaged we will resume the Open Wednesday competitions now that the Comeragh Oil sponsored Winter league is at the matchplay stages. This is hoped to maintain interest and impetus prior to the onset of the spring/summer period when the main body of the golfing calendar for 2007 will commence. The Wednesday competitions will continue up to the re-start of the Al Eile Stud Open Qualifiers on Wednesday 18th April 2007.
The fixture schedule for the South East League is now set out and the full list of dates and details are posted on the notice board. The South East League is a very important stepping stone in the preparation for both the Pierce Purcell and Jimmy Bruen GUI events and our Pierce Purcell and Jimmy Bruen Managers will be keeping a close eye on proceedings and will be trying to select as varied group of players as possible during the South East League so as to ensure the strongest possible teams represent West Waterford later on in the season.
Any member who is interested in being considered for selection for the South East League is requested to place their name on the list. Prospective players are asked to note that it is their lowest handicap in the previous 2006 season which is applicable.

Dungarvan Seniors Pairs Classic:
This competition which was a huge success last year will again be staged at the 3 local courses Dungarvan, Gold Coast and West Waterford on Tuesday 10th, Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th April 2007. The competition format is as follows: 2 person rumble, 2 person scramble and Fourball Betterball. The competition fees are as follows: 2 nights b&b, 3 rounds of golf and entry is €142pps, for visitors not availing of accommodation the fee is €67 pp, while members of any of the three host Clubs may enter for €62pp. Last years event was fully subscribed and hopefully the same will apply for this year’s event. Entry forms for this year’s renewal are available at the 3 participating Golf Clubs.
Dungarvan Golf Triangle:
Golf tourism as we all know is now a big business in Ireland and the Dungarvan area is ideally placed to garner its share of this ever-expanding market. A major selling point of our three courses, Dungarvan Golf Club, Gold Coast Golf Club and ourselves West Waterford Golf Club is that we are all within 5 minutes drive of Dungarvan town center. The “Dungarvan Golf Triangle” effectively, allows you to purchase a ticket that enables you to play each of the three courses, Monday to Friday for the combined price of €80, and in this era of high green fee rates, this represents good value. ‘The Dungarvan Golf Triangle’ is being advertised through all the usual mediums and is on sale in each of the three golf clubs. Tickets are valid up to 31st December 2007.
Dungarvan Golf International:
Following feedback from previous competitors and extensive discussions between the 3 local golf clubs, the Classic will undergo some changes in date and formats to provide fresh impetus to the event. The 2007 Classic is taking place on the 12th, 13th and 14th June 2007, for information on the event please contact the Tournament Co-coordinator Marie Curran on 058-42870 or 087- 2347918.
