Gents Notes for week ending 23rd October 2005
Open Qualifier Kindly Sponsored by Fáilte House
The Grand Final of the Fáilte House Open qualifier took place on Sunday 23rd October last. Competition was fierce as all the qualifiers tried their utmost to lift the coveted title of Grand Final winner for 2005, which of course carries with it a five year exemption from qualifying in future Open qualifiers. This weekly competition generates huge interest year on year with this year being the most successful to date. The Open Qualifier is a keystone of the golfing calendar at West Waterford Golf and Country Club. The presentation of a fabulous array of prizes took place before a packed clubhouse on Sunday Evening.

A sincere thank you to all the members and our numerous visitors who have supported our Open Qualifier since last April, ensuring its tremendous success this year, we look forward to seeing you all back in April 2006 when the Open Qualifier will resume.

Open Wednesday Competitions
Owing to the ongoing success of the Fáilte House Open Wednesday qualifiers, we are going to continue with an Open Wednesday competition from Wednesday 26th October onwards. These competitions will be known as Autumn/Winter Open Wednesday competitions and will commence on Wednesday 26th October following the Fáilte House Grand Final. The entry fee for visitors will be €20.00. Prizes will be awarded each and every Wednesday and will be dependent on the number of entries. This is hoped to maintain interest and impetus on the Wednesdays up to Christmas, following the Fáilte House Grand Final. Further details on these Wednesday competitions will be printed in the notes and posted in the clubhouse in the near future, so watch this space!

Friday 28th, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th October – Club Competition, 18-hole Stableford.
Wednesday 2nd November – Wednesday Open 18 hole Stableford prizes dependent on entry
Thursday 3rd November – Junior Competition at 11am
Sunday 13th November – Captains’ Golf Day (Further details to follow)
Timesheets are in operation for all fixtures: to help with the smooth running of competitions please put your name on the timesheet or call the office to be sure of your place on the tee.

Captains’ Golf Day
On Sunday 13th November there is going to be a Captains’ Golf Day hosted by Alicia and John. The competition will take the form of a 9-hole scramble for Ladies and Gents with a shotgun start at 1pm. Finger food, entertainment and a presentation of all outstanding prizes, including all Club match play winners will follow this and all members are urged to do their utmost to participate on the day.
Algarve Golf
Seven West Waterford Golf Club members were among a group of twenty eight local golfers who recently spent a week in Portugal. The Dungarvan Crystal Golf Society organized the trip. Congratulations to Pat Power, Paddy Murphy and Jimmy Murphy who secured first place on three of the top courses. Tony O’Sullivan and Ger Kavanagh also figured in the main prizes, while Percy Walsh and Eoin Murphy though not in the prizes, played some excellent golf, well done to all.
Club Singles Matchplay
The Club singles, which is kindly sponsored again this year by East Cork Oil, is now nearing completion. Responsibility of arranging matches lies with the top pairing on the draw sheet in each round.
Junior News
The next Junior Competition is scheduled for Thursday 3rd November at 11am during the mid-term break.

Dungarvan Golf Triangle
Golf tourism as we all know is now a big business in Ireland and the Dungarvan area is ideally placed to garner its share of this ever-expanding market. A major selling point of our three courses, Dungarvan Golf Club, Gold Coast Golf Club and ourselves West Waterford Golf Club is that we are all within 5 minutes drive of Dungarvan town center. The “Dungarvan Golf Triangle” effectively, allows you to purchase a ticket that enables you to play each of the three courses, Monday to Friday for the combined price of €75, and in this era of high green fee rates, this represents good value. "The Dungarvan Golf Triangle" is being advertised through all the usual mediums and is on sale in each of the three golf clubs. Tickets are valid up to 31st December 2006.
Names only on Timesheets and cancelled Teetimes
With more limited time available for play and increased playing numbers, the practice of putting down a name +1 or +2 is no longer acceptable. Only individual names will satisfy as this facilitates the smooth running of the timesheet, by identifying who is actually booked in to play with whom. All members are also urged to telephone the office if they wish to cancel a tee time that they have booked in the interest of fairness to all.
