WEST WATERFORD GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB NOTES

Notes for week ending 27th August 2005

All Ireland Glory for West Waterford Boys.

On Tuesday last, at Dungarvan Golf Club, the Junior Foursomes team of Seamus Power, Philip Spratt, David Curran, and Philip Walsh created history by bringing the first All-Ireland team title to the club.
As Munster Champions, and with the local venue, there was an air of expectancy and trepidation as they teed off in the morning against Connaught Champions Galway, in the semi-final. It was an extremely tight match all the way but with Seamus Power and Philip Spratt holding a four-hole advantage, and David Curran and Philip Walsh just one- hole adrift, they advanced to the final.
Meanwhile, Ulster Champions, City of Derry proved too good for the Leinster Champions, Kilkenny setting up the final between West Waterford and the City of Derry. The Northern Boys have a most impressive record in Junior Golf and would provide the sternest opposition. With huge home support, West Waterford got away to a flying start and while they wobbled a little around the turn, the Boys from the Brickey Valley resisted every challenge. They showed outstanding skill and character during the vital closing holes, particularly the youngest team members, 14-year olds Philip Spratt and Philip Walsh. To the acclaim of the huge gallery, they finally secured the coveted green pennant, with David and Philip Walsh winning by 3 holes, and Seamus and Philip Spratt winning by 1 hole.
At the presentation, attended by all the leading officials of the G.U.I. and the I.L.G.U., the Golfing Union President Mr. Lindsay Shanks paid tribute to the Boys for the wonderful spirit in which the game was played. He went on to present the trophy to the team manager Justin Spratt, who also created history by being speechless.
Many thanks to all who traveled on the day to support the team, not forgetting reserves Cian Kearney and Kieran Gee, and the caddies. A special word of thanks to Dungarvan Golf Club for all their help and support particularly in the run-up to the event, their co-operation was greatly appreciated.
Another notable piece of history unfolded with Philip Spratt winning this All-Ireland Medal; his father Austin was also a winner in the same competition when playing for Dungarvan in 1985, at Athlone Golf Club.
It is a fitting end to a fantastic year for the club, who now hold the Irish Youths Championship courtesy of Seamus Power and the Irish Junior Foursomes Championship. Needless to say, the celebrations are on-going!
