WEST WATERFORD GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB NOTES

Notes for week ending 14th August 2005

PRESIDENT’S PRIZE 2005 PRESENTED BY WILLIE LYONS

The timesheet is now posted for the 2005 President’s Prize, which this year is kindly, presented by Willie Lyons. The competition takes place on Friday 19th, Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st August and will be a 36-hole Stableford event off the white markers. The draw for playing partners and precise playing time takes place in the Clubhouse on Wednesday evening 17th August at 8pm. Willie is a staunch and hard-working Club member, and has done Trojan carrying out numerous Club duties, and I am sure all the members will be out in force to support him. We wish Willie & wife Geraldine all the very best for this prestigious weekend at West Waterford.

SEAMUS POWER CONTINUES IN SPARKLING FORM
Irish junior international Seamus Power swept to the biggest first round victory in the British Boy’s Open Amateur golf championship at Hunstanton Golf Club on the Norfolk coast on Monday the 8th. Seamus who recently won the June Park Hotel Sports-star award was in inspirational form to crush Peter Williams of Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, son of the legendary Welsh rugby star JPR Williams, by 8 & 6. “It was one of those days when everything went right. I am thrilled to have won my first round so comfortably," said Seamus on Monday following his win. Seamus built on his successful first round effort, needing only 14 holes to dispose of Tim Chatfield from Wentworth Golf Club by 6 & 4 in the second round. Seamus then produced yet another spectacular performance for the third consecutive day to storm into round four (the last 32) on Wednesday. The 18-year old International overwhelmed Italian Joon Kim by 6 & 5 meaning he had only played 39 holes to achieve his three victories. “I felt great and really played some awesome golf, I did not give Joon a chance”, Seamus said after his bogey free round which put him through to meet fellow Irish International Shane Lowry from Esker Hills in the last 32. Unfortunately Seamus’s great run came to an end on Thursday morning when Shane came through after a close match to win 2 & 1 to advance to the last 16. While Seamus will be somewhat disappointed to lose out at this stage, he can feel proud of his efforts in Hunstanton and certainly all at West Waterford are proud of his achievements in the last week. Well done Seamus.

JACK LYNCH MEMORIAL TROPHY
Our Jack Lynch team gained their third victory in this annual event played between the three local golf clubs on Monday evening last. Vice Captain of West Waterford and team manager Ollie Broderick had his panel fully tuned up to score a resounding victory and following this win Ollie’s name is in the hat for several managerial positions in the coming year so 2006 promises to be a very busy year for Ollie!
Following the matches at the three courses the players headed for Johnny Lynch’s hostelry, The Parrish Bar where Johnny had food laid on for the participants and discussions and post mortems galore ensued.
Many thanks is due to Johnny Lynch for his continued sponsorship and support of this great fun event between the 3 local Golf Clubs, which is in memory of his late father who was twice Captain of Dungarvan Golf Club.
