WEST WATERFORD GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB NOTES

Notes for week ending 8th May 2005

AIB IRISH AMATEUR OPEN AT CARTON HOUSE

Club Members Seamus Power and Mark Shanahan were both in action in the Irish Amateur Open Championship at the O'Meara designed new golf facility at Carton House over the weekend.

They opened with scores of 69 and 76 respectively with Seamus playing superb golf carving out 7 birdies in his first round, to lie in third place entering the second round. He followed up his 69 with a steady 73 to be positioned in 2nd place at 2 under par after the second round.

In a National and International field of 120 the cut was for 40 players to compete in the final 36 holes on Sunday. Seamus carded rounds of 74 and 73 to finish in fifth place on his own with 289 for the competition. Unfortunately Mark did not make it to the last 40.

Seamus played with wisdom and grace displaying maturity beyond his years and as the leading Munster player in the Competition he is in a good position for future selection in Irish National teams.

Well done to Seamus and Mark for flying the West Waterford flag high in this prestigious event.

J.B CARR TROPHY

The West Waterford J.B. Carr Trophy team was in action on Thursday last in Tramore Golf Club and they were victorious in dramatic fashion. At the halfway stage it looked like a lost cause but the team ably led by Terry O’ Callaghan managed to eke out a victory on a scoreline of 3 to 2 to progress to the next round of a competition in which they are Munster Champions.

THE WALTER RALEIGH THREE BROTHERS CLASSIC

The Walter Raleigh 3 Brothers Golf Classic of 2005 sponsored by Guinness Group Sales took place at West Waterford and Youghal Golf clubs on Friday and Saturday 6th and 7th May. This was the ninth year of this unique competition and it was great to see all the familiar faces and some new ones all in threes!

The event proved a huge success once more, due in no small part to the hard work which has been put into it down through the years by well known Youghal golfer Jim Furey and the Murphy family from The Walter Raleigh Hotel in Youghal.

The groups of 3 brothers played 18 holes in West Waterford on Friday and 18 holes in Youghal G.C. on Saturday with all participants getting together in the Walter Raleigh on Saturday Night for the Presentation Banquet.

In the last week Ed and Mary Murphy have sold the Walter Raleigh Hotel and we wish them well for the future.

DUNGARVAN GOLF INTERNATIONAL

This prestigious event now in its seventh year takes place from 24th to the 26th May at or three local courses. The International is a showcase event for golf in the area and brings an influx of visitors to the town and surrounding areas, which is of benefit to all. DUNGARVAN GOLF TRIANGLE

Golf tourism as we all know is now a big business in Ireland and the Dungarvan area is ideally placed to garner its share of this ever expanding market. A major selling point of our three courses, Dungarvan Golf Club, Gold Coast Golf Club and ourselves West Waterford Golf Club is that we are all within 5 minutes drive of Dungarvan town center. The ‘Dungarvan Golf Triangle’ effectively, allows you to purchase a ticket that enables you to play each of the three courses, Monday to Friday for the combined price of €75, and in this era of high green fee rates, this represents good value. ‘The Dungarvan Golf Triangle’ is being advertised through all the usual mediums and is on sale in each of the three golf clubs.
