WEST WATERFORD GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB NOTES
Notes for week ending 20th June 2004
SHANAHAN FLYS THE FLAG FOR WEST WATERFORD AT IRISH CLOSE.
Mark Shanahan continued with his fine form during the matchplay stages of the Irish Close following his qualification over the weekend. Mark beat local player John Neary in his morning match before claiming the match against the defending champion Mark O’Sullivan in the afternoon. The 22-year old +1 West Waterford man beat the Galway star by one hole courtesy of a regulation par 4 at the 18th. "O’Sullivan is a great player and I just got the breaks at the right time. A couple of things went my way at the start and in the middle of the round and I’m delighted to go through", said Mark afterwards. Mark took an early grip on affairs when he won the 9th, 10th, 11th in par to go three up before O’ Sullivan fought his way back into the tie. The Galway ace won the 13th in par and was conceded the par five 14th to allow him to reduce the deficit to a manageable one hole with just four left to play. O’ Sullivan then chipped stone dead at the 240-yard 16th to level the match with a winning par. But after a half in bogeys at the 17th, O’ Sullivan lost the last to a par four after bunkering his tee shot which saw Mark score a notable victory. Unfortunately, Irish senior panelist Andy McCormick proved too strong for Mark on a scoreline of 2 & 1 in the last 16. Despite this defeat his performance at Donegal Golf Club has considerably raised Mark’s profile within Irish Amateur Golf circles and all at West Waterford fully expect Mark to build on this strong performance. We wish him all the best in all the prestigious tournaments that he has entered in the coming months, including the North of Ireland at Royal Portrush G.C. and the South of Ireland at Lahinch G.C.

The Sisters of the Bon-Savour opened Sunrise House in 1998 for both male and female adults who require a high level of care, support and supervision. A variety of programs and activities to suit the needs of each person are provided. These activities include social training both within and outside of the center. To facilitate this Sunrise requires its own transport. Proceeds from the Golf Classic will go towards providing this. To book a time for the golf classic please contact Jim Furey on 086-8355086 or 024-92539.
TIMESHEETS
Time sheets apply for all club competitions. Please put up you’re name and those playing with you for your place on the Tee. Please remember: Players with their names on the timesheet have priority on the 1st Tee. A full list of our fixtures and other information is available on the club Website:
Owing to increased playing numbers, the practice of putting down a name +1 or +2 is no longer acceptable. Only individual names will suffice as this facilitates the smooth running of the timesheet, by identifying who is actually booked in to play with whom.
Care of The Course (Bunkers)
The following paragraph is an extract from the recently revised Rules of Golf approved by the R & A. It is from section 1 – Etiquette; Behavior on the course
"Before leaving a bunker, players should carefully fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints made by them and any nearby made by others. If a rake is within reasonable proximity of the bunker, the rake should be used for this purpose."
