WEST WATERFORD GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB NOTES.

Week ending 9th May 2004

AIB IRISH AMATEUR OPEN.

The AIB sponsored Irish Amateur Open was held over the weekend at the very challenging Carton House Golf Course designed by Colin Montgomerie. An International field of close on 120 of the top amateur golfers in the world competed for the title in this prestigious event. West Waterford's Mark Shanahan was placed 19th overall and 7th in the Irish field with rounds of 77, 73, 78 and 72 making a total of 300. Craig Smith of Wales won the Competition on 289. This is a tremendous achievement for Mark in his first year competing in national and International Amateur events and shows great promise for him in his future golfing career. Well done Mark and good luck in the future.

THE WALTER RALEIGH THREE BROTHERS CLASSIC.

The Walter Raleigh 3 Brothers Classic of 2004 took place at West Waterford Golf and Country Club on Friday 7th May. This was the eighth installment of this ever-popular competition and it was great to see all the familiar faces again (in triplicate!) The event was a huge success and was testament to the hard work that has been put into it down through the years by well known Youghal golfer Jim Furey and the Murphy family from the Walter Raleigh Hotel in Youghal. This year groups of three brothers from 61 Clubs played 18 Holes in West Waterford on Friday 7th May and 18 Holes in Youghal GC on Saturday 8th May with all participants getting together in the Walter Raleigh on the Saturday Night for the presentation banquet.
