Gents Notes for week ending 29th June 2008
Captains Prize 2008 kindly Presented by Malcolm Ashby
The premier ‘major’ of 2008 the Captain’s Prize kindly presented by Malcolm Ashby took place over the weekend and despite the sometimes inclement weather, the golf was good and the competition had that added edge of a major. The qualifying round of 18-hole stroke took place on Friday and Saturday, with the leading 90 qualifiers completing again on Sunday over another 18 holes, with the aggregate score over the qualifying round and the final round determining the winner. Malcolm is a staunch and hard-working Club member, and the huge turnout was testament to Malcolm’s popularity within the Club. The presentation of prizes took place in the Clubhouse on Sunday night before a packed house as members were out in force to honor the Captain and we would like to thank Malcolm and Eithne for a great weekend of golf at West Waterford Golf and Country Club.

Irish Youths Championship
Treble delight for Seamus Power as he captures his third Irish Youths Championship
Few of today’s golfers can lay claim to holding the best record in a golfing Union of Ireland National Championship but following his victory at Lisburn Golf Club West Waterford’s Seamus Power has become only the second player in the history of the Irish Youths Amateur open Championship to win the title on three separate occasions, following john McHenrys wins in 1980, 1981 and 1985.
Shamus’s record narrowly eclipses McHenry’s on account of the silver medal won by him as runner up to Gareth Shaw at Royal Tara in 2006 in between his other two victories ay Portumna in 2005 and on his home course last year.
Defending champion Seamus led the way after the first round of the Irish Youth Amateur Open Championship at Lisburn Golf Club. The West Waterford man, who captured the title on home soil last year, got off to a blistering start in the morning with birdies on the opening three holes and followed up with another on the index 1 par four seventh for and outward nine of 32. Seamus covered the more difficult back nine in 37 strokes – recording eight pars and just a single bogey on the tough 11th hole – to lead by a stroke from Donaghadee’s Garth Boyd.
Defending Champion Seamus fired a course record equaling 67 to extend his lead at the halfway stage. The West Waterford man who led from pillar to post to capture the title on home soil last year was bidding to repeat that feat after his opening 69 left him a shot ahead of Donaghadee’s Garth Boyd. In round two he again enjoyed a wonderful start with birdies on the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th and 8th. A bogey on the ninth saw him equal his morning opening nine of 32 strokes. Birdies on the 12th, 14th, 15th and 17th were mixed with bogeys on the 13th and 16th holes to leave him standing on the par three final hole needing a par to break the long standing course record. The Irish international found the bunker with a five iron and having extricated his ball to around 12 feet narrowly missed his par putt but tidied up a bogey to open a five stroke lead over his nearest rival, England’s Liam Burns.
Seamus recorded a third round of 70 to forge nine strokes clear with a round to play. He birdied the first hole and the index one-seventh on his way to an outward nine of 34 strokes. He recorded further birdies on the 14th and 18th and his only dropped shots of the day were on the 10th and 17th.
Holding a nine stroke lead entering the final round in was simply a matter of posting a steady score and that’s precisely what Seamus achieved-recording a solid 71 to run out the winner by 11 strokes. It was the second widest margin of victory in the history of the event- bettered only by Mark Gannon’s 14 shot win in Athlone in 1971.
