Spring Open Wednesday Competitions
As envisaged we will be resuming our Open Wednesday competitions now that the Comeragh Oil sponsored Winter league is at the Matchplay stages. The first Spring Open Wednesday competition will take place on Wednesday 20th February. This is hoped to maintain interest and impetus prior to the onset of the spring/summer period when the main body of the golfing calendar for 2008 will commence. The Wednesday competitions will continue up to the re-commencement of the Al Eile Stud Open Qualifiers on Wednesday 16th April 2008.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Philip Spratt on his great win in the South East Senior Alliance which took place in Kilkenny Golf Club on Sunday last.
Texas Hold’em Tournament
West Waterford Golf Club plays host to a Texas Hold’em Cards Tournament on Friday 22nd February. Registration takes place at 8:00pm with play commencing at 8.45pm, €20 to play with a €10 re-buy, all proceeds for the Brickey rangers GAA & Camogie Club.
Names only on Timesheets and Cancelled Tee-times
With more limited time available for play and increased playing numbers, the practice of putting down a name +1 or +2 is no longer acceptable. With immediate effect +1 or +2 on singles timesheets will be removed. Only individual names will suffice as this identifies who is actually booked in to play. This facilitates the smooth running of the timesheet. All members are also urged to telephone the office, at the earliest opportunity, if they wish to cancel a tee time that they have previously booked, in the interest of fairness to all. Please remember: Players with their names on the timesheet have priority on the 1st tee.
New Rules of Golf Booklets
There have been a number of revisions made to the Rules of Golf and consequently new booklets have been produced by the R&A. There is a limited supply of these new booklets available in the office and they will be distributed on a strictly first come first served basis.
Subscriptions
Subscriptions for the 2008 season are now due, we would like to thank those who have already paid for their prompt response, and request all members who haven’t paid to please submit the appropriate amount to the office, by post or in person at their earliest convenience.
Care of the Course
Repairing of pitch/plug marks on greens, replacing of divots on tees and fairways and raking bunkers are all important aspects of care of the course. Numerous visitors to our club in recent months have been complimentary on the quality and appearance of our golf course; please do your level best to keep it this way.
Captains Drive-in, Mixed Scramble and Subscription Free Draw.
Joan Curran and Malcolm Ashby will host the traditional Captain’s Drive-In on Sunday 2nd March at 2.30pm. All members are urged to lend their support to their respective Captains as we look forward to the dawn of another golfing season in West Waterford. The drive-in will be followed by a Mixed Scramble at 3pm, The Subscription Free draw and Wine tasting provided by Wine Buff Ltd; (Michael Sheehan) will take place in the Clubhouse afterwards.
Deise Golf Pass News
As previously mentioned in dispatches, it was agreed between the Golf Clubs of the Deise Golf Pass initiative, to proceed with a series of Open Winter Competitions. There will be 5 qualifiers each week in each Golf Club (3 members and 2 non-members), which will mean that there will be 90 golfers for the Grand Final which will take place on 24th April in Waterford Castle Golf Club. West Waterford’s second week will take place from 3rd March to 9th March 2008. The full remaining list is as follows:

Fixtures Booklet
Our fixture booklet for the 2008 season is now nearing completion with several members of the Committee putting together the final entries in the golfing calendar for 2008. It should be published in approximately three weeks time and will be freely available in the office. All members are urged to pick up a copy in order to make themselves familiar with the up and coming events of what promises to be an extremely busy golfing year at West Waterford Golf and Country Club.
Dungarvan Seniors Pairs Classic
This competition which was a huge success last year will again be staged at the 3 local courses Dungarvan, Gold Coast and West Waterford on Tuesday 8th, Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th April 2008. It is a team event for golfers aged 55 years and above, open to ladies, gents and mixed pairs. The competition fees are as follows: 2 nights b&b, 3 rounds of golf and entry is €149pps, for players not availing of accommodation the competition fee is €75 pp. Last years event was fully subscribed and hopefully the same will apply for this year’s event. Entry forms for this year’s renewal are available at the 3 participating Golf Clubs.
Dungarvan Golf Triangle
A major selling point of our three courses, Dungarvan Golf Club, Gold Coast Golf Club and ourselves West Waterford Golf Club is that we are all within 5 minutes drive of Dungarvan town center. The “Dungarvan Golf Triangle” effectively, allows you to purchase a ticket that enables you to play each of the three courses, Monday to Friday for the combined price of €80, and in this era of high green fee rates, this represents good value. ‘The Dungarvan Golf Triangle’ is being advertised through all the usual mediums and is on sale in each of the three golf clubs. Tickets are valid up to 31st December 2008.
